Galicia

Buy Galicia wines

Just north of Portugal in northwestern Spain lies the wine region of Galicia. Besides stunning natural beauty and beautiful rivers, you'll also find extensive vineyards here. Although the Galicia wine region has only gained prominence in recent years, the quality is incredibly high. While the wines were once primarily consumed in the region itself, a growing number of wine lovers are discovering this place and its wines. Modern, fresh, and aromatic white and red wines are produced here.

The climate in Galicia

Galicia is the wettest and coldest region in the country. And these natural influences certainly influence the wines. The white wines are generally fresh and have developed beautiful, mild acidity. The red wines are already slightly fruity and are much less heavy than red wines from elsewhere in Spain. Temperature variations in Spain are significant. While there can be plenty of sunshine, the temperature often doesn't exceed 23 degrees Celsius. This presents considerable challenges for the winemakers. But they have now perfected their viticulture to perfection, resulting in high-quality Galician wines.

The Albarino wines from Galicia

The most important and certainly the best-known DO in the Galician wine region is the Rías Baixas. This DO is known for producing the finest white wines made from the Albarino grape. The entire area has a very wet climate. While this makes the landscape exceptionally green, winemakers must be vigilant against mildew and mold. Besides the Albarino grape, Treixadure and Loureira Blanca are also frequently used in white wines. A prime example of the well-known Albarino wine is the De Fornos Albarino from the Chaves Castel winery. This white wine comes to the glass with its familiar tropical notes. The fruity character is also evident in the taste. A lively white wine with pleasant acidity. The finish has a slightly salty note, immediately tempting you to take another sip.

Galicia and its many regions

In contrast to the many white wines produced in Galicia, the DO Ribeire Sacra produces a large amount of red wine. This red wine is made from the Mencía grape, a variety that reveals a different, lesser-known side of Spain. These are often young, light, and fruity wines, a welcome change from the heavy Cianzas and Reserves we're used to. The grapes are planted on hillsides, allowing them to enjoy plenty of sunshine. Besides this DO, Galicia also produces Monterrei, Valdeorras, and Ribeiro, where quality wines are made from lesser-known grape varieties. The Godello grape originates from Valdeorras. Let Silva Daponte Godello surprise you with what this grape has to offer. A pleasant fruity aroma leaps from the glass. The taste is round and creamy, with distinct notes of grapefruit, apricot, and nectarine. A soft wine with pleasant acidity and a long finish.
