The origin, grapes and craftsmanship behind this wine.

The Wolftrap Red is Boekenhoutskloof’s supple, spicy interpretation of a classic Rhône blend, with Syrah as a juicy backbone and Mourvèdre for added depth. Dark fruit, violets, spices, and velvety tannins make this an expressive South African red wine with plenty of character and remarkably high drinkability.

The wine carries the Wine of Origin Western Cape designation, with Boekenhoutskloof specifically selecting fruit from Swartland for the Syrah.

  • Location / Origin: Swartland is located north of Cape Town and is one of the most important South African regions for Syrah. The dry, sunny landscape and the open terrain provide excellent conditions for Mediterranean grape varieties here.

  • Climate & Influences: Warm days ensure ripe fruit, while wind and cooler nights help maintain freshness and aromatic tension.

  • Vineyard & Grapes: Mourvèdre feels right at home in these warm conditions thanks to its thick skin and vigorous growth. Together with Syrah, this creates a blend in which ripe fruit, spiciness, and structure remain beautifully balanced.

Boekenhoutskloof opts for a restrained cellar style in which the character of the grapes remains clearly recognizable.

  • Vinification: The wine is made with minimal intervention, allowing the juicy fruit, spicy notes, and savory nuances of the blend to emerge clearly.

  • Maturation / Wood aging: The wine receives 8 months of maturation with light wood influence. This provides extra structure and roundness without overpowering the fruit-driven style.

The blend combines 3 classic Rhône grapes, each playing a distinct role.

  • 79% Syrah – Swartland: Contributes black cherry, dark plum, blueberry, violets, and peppery spice.

  • 20% Mourvèdre – Western Cape: Provides extra color, smoky and savory nuances, and more depth in the structure.

  • 1% Viognier – Western Cape: Ensures a subtle floral lift and extra aromatic refinement.

Vintage 2024
2022 was a very good vintage for red wines in the Western Cape, South Africa. A cooler growing season allowed for a longer ripening period, resulting in wines with excellent fruit concentration, balanced acidity, and refined tannins.

More about Boekenhoutskloof

Boekenhoutskloof was founded in 1776 in a remote part of the Franschhoek Valley, making it one of the historic wine farms of the region. A group of friends bought the estate in 1996, after which Marc Kent played a major role in developing it into one of South Africa’s best-known quality producers. The Wolftrap refers to an old wolf trap that was once found on the estate. Wolves were never actually found there, but the story grew into a fitting name for a wine that keeps the adventurous history of the estate alive.
