One of the Rhône's great success stories is the development of Domaine de la Janasse over the past twenty years. Janasse's Châteauneuf-du-Pape now ranks among the absolute top wines of the southern Rhône, as the top scores for Janasse's great Châteauneuf-du-Pape impressively demonstrate. It's remarkable how consistently excellent Châteauneuf-du-Pape is produced here in every season, from vineyards with some vines over 100 years old. Spontaneous fermentation in the cellar, the Grenache grapes aged exclusively in large, old wooden barrels, and the bottling is unfiltered.

The French leading winery Domaine de la Janasse

Domaine de la Janasse, one of the Rhône Valley's leading estates, is run by the talented brother-and-sister team Christophe and Isabelle Sabon. Located in the northeastern part of the region, near Courthezon, they produce an incredible range of wines, from their Vin de Pays to their world-class Cotes du Rones and Chateauneuf du Papes, all of which are remarkable. The Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is an 80% Grenache blend with Syrah, Mourvedre, Clairette, and other varieties. This Chateauneuf du Pape is made entirely according to the traditional method. The Grenache is aged in casks, while the Syrah and Mourvedre are aged one-third in new barrels and two-thirds in barrels aged one to three years. At Janasse, the wine, not the oak, should dominate.

What does the Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes taste like?

The Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes shimmers deep red in the glass. Aromas of black currant, smoked meat, chocolate, roasted spices, and a serious minerality rise from the glass. It is a full-bodied wine, exceptionally concentrated with beautifully complex layers on the palate. It is smooth and textured, yet remains consistently refreshing and pure. The finish lingers for several minutes. A true experience!
