A delicious dry white wine derived from the steepest slate layers. It's rightly called "old vines," as the small berries come from 120-year-old vines. The vines are planted in a prime location, allowing us to enjoy the deep, silky texture of this Alte Reben Riesling.

The best Riesling wines from the Saar

With just 800 hectares of vineyards, the Saar region's viticulture is relatively small. Where the Saar flows into the Mosel, the Riesling grape dominates. Nearly 80 percent of the vines are planted with this white queen. Despite the relatively small wine-growing area, the world's finest and most mineral-rich Rieslings are produced here. The Saar's secret lies in its 400-million-year-old slate soils. The barren and fertile, steep slopes face primarily south. This results in a slightly colder climate than on the Mosel. This results in light, perfectly balanced white wines. The foundation stone of the current Van Volxem winery was laid in the 3rd century. It only received its original name when it was separated from the church and taken over by the Brussels brewer Gustav van Volxem. He immediately saw the potential of the vineyards on the steep slopes of the Saar, which are among the finest slate vineyards in the world. After being harvested by hand, the selected grapes are gently pressed and then spontaneously fermented in large wooden barrels. Aging takes place for six to seven months in stainless steel tanks. The long aging on the fine lees gives the wine added complexity and creaminess.

The aromas of Alte Reben Riesling

The Van Volxem Alte Reben Riesling has an intensely spicy nose with notes of coriander, gooseberry, and ripe pineapple. It has plenty of spice and great complexity. On the palate, it's extremely full-bodied with wonderful acidity and a long, mineral finish. A robust yet equally superb Riesling that truly offers excellent value.
