The origin, grapes and craftsmanship behind this wine.

Telmo Rodriguez LZ Lanzaga 2024 BIO is an organic Rioja from the village of Lanciego de Álava in Rioja Alavesa. LZ was created as a tribute to the village winegrowers of the 1920s: a vibrant, spicy red wine made from Tempranillo, Graciano, and Garnacha, fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in cement to highlight the pure character of Lanciego.

LZ comes from our own certified organic vineyards around Lanciego in Rioja Alavesa.

Location / Origin: The wine originates from Lanciego de Álava, in Rioja Alavesa. This part of Rioja is known for its high altitude, calcareous soils, and red wines with freshness, tension, and spicy depth.
Plots: The grapes come from sites including Campoluengo, Las Rozas, Castillejo, El Romeral, Agozaderas, and El Plano. This mix of locations gives LZ its village character.
Altitude: The vineyards are located at an altitude of 450–650 m. This ensures the grapes remain fresh and aromatic, even in a warm year like 2024.
Soil: The soils are of continental origin from the Tertiary period. They consist of sandstone plateaus with stony, calcareous, and loamy soils, complemented by slopes on marl with a finer texture.
Vineyard management: The wine comes from our own organic vineyards in Lanciego, with bush vines and manual harvesting in small crates.

The vinification is focused on village character, fresh fruit, and a pure expression of Rioja Alavesa.

Harvest & Selection: The grapes are hand-harvested in small crates. In 2024, the harvest began on September 23rd and ended on October 10th.
Fermentation: The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts in small cement tanks. This creates a direct, vibrant style in which fruit, spice, and soil expression clearly stand out.
Aging: LZ is aged for 6–7 months in cement tanks. This maturation keeps the wine juicy and pure, with soft tannins and plenty of energy.
2024 Vintage: 2024 was a hot and dry year, with short, intense heatwaves and a wet month of May. The grapes arrived in healthy condition, but rain during the harvest made the year challenging, and yields were about 50% lower than in 2023.
Alcohol percentage: At 14% alcohol, LZ 2024 has sufficient body, while the altitude, cement aging, and grape blend ensure freshness and balance.

LZ 2024 is made from three classic Rioja grape varieties.

Tempranillo – Rioja Alavesa: Tempranillo forms the base and provides red fruit, juiciness, soft tannins, and the recognizable Rioja structure.
Graciano – Rioja Alavesa: Graciano contributes tension, fresh acidity, dark spice, and extra length to the blend.
Garnacha – Rioja Alavesa: Garnacha adds riper red fruit, roundness, and a supple, inviting core of fruit.

Vintage 2022
2022 was a challenging, yet potentially very good harvest year for Rioja. Despite heatwaves, careful producers succeeded in producing high-quality wines with good balance and expression.

More about Telmo Rodriguez

Telmo Rodriguez returned to Rioja in 1998 with the goal of bringing the character of historical village wines back to light. Bodega Lanzaga operates on a human scale around Lanciego and owns small plots that together showcase the essence of this village. Within the estate, LZ is the most direct translation of that idea: organic, village-focused, fermented in cement, and crafted to keep the flavor memory of traditional Rioja alive.
