Unparalleled beauty—that's the first thing we noted when we tasted this Portal Six Barrels Tawny Reserve Port. We've known the Quinta do Portal port house for a long time, of course, as it's been in the Portal family's hands for years. It's one of the few port houses that grows all its grapes in-house. Portal has a whopping 95 hectares of vineyards that tell the story of the Douro region. Each grape variety is planted in its prime location, and Portal owns four different Quintas in total: Quinta da Abelheira, Quinta do Confradeiro, Quinta dos Muros, and Quinta do Portal. The beautiful slopes on which the grapes grow lend the powerful style to this Six Barrels Tawny Reserve Port, among others. Thanks to the love and care of winemaker Paulo Coutinho and master blender Jeremy Bull, Portal's port wines form a solid foundation.

6 different wooden barrels are used

This red port uses local grape varieties such as Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, and many others. All vineyards have ancient soils, from which the vines draw their strength. The perfect climate, combined with the old, thick vines, results in a unique and powerful harvest. It is harvested entirely by hand and fermented in oak barrels. This Tawny Reserve Port is aged in a total of six different types of oak, hence the name "Six Barrels." The result, after an average of six to seven years of aging, is astonishing.

Full and very powerful this Port Portal Six Barrels

Upon opening the bottle, we immediately smell hints of spices, black fruit, raisins, and a touch of dark chocolate. In the glass, it has the exact color of a reserve tawny, a brownish-red with a dark rim. With our noses raised, we encounter a powerful aroma of roasted nuts, ripe cherries, a hint of cassis, and, of course, a treasure trove of spices. The first sip immediately reveals nuances of black fruit and sweet spices like cinnamon. The palate is teased with notes of raisins, coffee, caramel, and a touch of red fruit. The smooth, sweet finish completes the experience.
