From vineyard to bottle

The origin, grapes and craftsmanship behind this wine.

There are many port houses, but few family-owned port houses, like Quinta do Portal. Portal's vineyards have lined the Douro River for hundreds of years, making it one of the oldest wine regions in the world. It's a stunningly beautiful setting where the grapes grow, and the port wines are equally magnificent. The winery and some of its vineyards are located near the town of Pinhão, the heart of the port region. All Portal port wines are made from grapes grown in its own vineyards. In total, the port house has a remarkable 95 hectares of vineyards, allowing it to produce consistently top-quality wines. The vineyards are divided among several so-called Quintas: Quinta da Abelheira, Quinta do Confradeiro, Quinta dos Muros, and Quinta do Portal. Each Quinta has its own specialty and cultivates its grapes on different slopes in the Douro region. Over the years, significant investments have been made, guaranteeing quality for years to come. The Portal family loves traditions and we notice this in the aroma and taste of this Fine Ruby Porto, among others.

This Fine Ruby Porto is the latest port from the Quinta do Portal port house. It is made from local grape varieties found in the port region. The grapes grow on very old vines, where the subsoil serves as a treasure trove. Centuries of grape cultivation have saturated the soil. The grapes thrive in the perfect environment, with abundant sunshine and, thanks to the steep slopes, cool breezes. This results in a gentle and balanced growth process. When the grapes are ready for this Ruby Port, they are hand-harvested and transported to Portal.

The Portal Fine Ruby Port is briefly aged in oak to preserve all its fresh and soft sweet flavors. This gives it a ruby red color that truly sparkles beautifully in the glass. Because this Ruby Port is a blend of young and two-year-old ports, it develops a full-bodied yet intensely smooth character. This is also evident in the clean aroma, which offers impressions of plums, jam, cherries, and a touch of dark chocolate. The palate is very soft and delicately sweet on the tongue, with abundant ripe cherries and a touch of fresh blackberry easily discernible. The ripe, sweet aftertaste with hints of plums and currants gives this Ruby Port everything it needs.
