Maison Brotte Château de Bord Laudun Rouge 2022 is a powerful red Rhône wine from Laudun, made on a historic estate with vineyards surrounding the remains of a medieval castle. The combination of south-facing terraces, old vines, low yields, and more than 1 year of aging gives this wine a full-bodied, spicy, and layered style. The striking blend makes it particularly interesting: ripe red and black fruit, floral lift, pepper, depth, and a long, savory finish come together beautifully here.
Château de Bord is located in Laudun, within the Southern Rhône.
Location / Origin: The vineyard is located in Laudun l’Ardoise in the Gard, between Bagnols sur Cèze and Lirac. This is a warm part of the Southern Rhône where red wines can develop a lot of ripeness, spiciness, and concentration.
Vineyard: The estate covers 22 hectares of terraces on a south-facing slope. This location provides plenty of sunlight and helps the grapes ripen fully.
Soil: The soil consists of well-draining clay limestone and contains fossils of oysters and shells. This ancient marine origin gives the wine extra tension in addition to its ripe fruit.
Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are approximately 40 years old and yield a low output of 35 hl/ha. This ensures more concentrated fruit and greater depth in the final wine.
Vineyard Management: The vineyard is Terra Vitis and HVE 3 certified. Strict green practices, such as debudding, leaf removal, and green harvesting, help to limit yields and enhance grape quality.
The vinification focuses on ripe fruit, spiciness, and a full yet refined structure.
Harvest & Selection: The grapes are hand-picked in small crates and quickly transported to the cellar. This keeps the grapes intact and limits unwanted oxidation before fermentation.
Fermentation: After destemming and gentle crushing, the wine ferments at 28 °C, followed by 3 weeks of maceration. This skin contact gives color, spiciness, and tannin structure to the wine.
Co-fermentation: Syrah and Viognier are co-fermented for greater balance and aromatic lift. What is co-fermentation? It means grapes ferment together, allowing aroma, color, and structure to blend during fermentation.
Aging / Oak Maturation: The more powerful Grenache and Syrah age in French oak barrels, divided into 1/3 new wood, 1/3 one-wine-old barrels, and 1/3 two-wine-old barrels. The softer Grenache ages in concrete tanks and 100-year-old wooden foudres, ensuring the fruit remains vibrant and the structure is beautifully rounded.
Alcohol Content: With 14.5% alcohol, this Laudun Rouge has sufficient power for its ripe fruit, spicy notes, and oak aging.
This red Rhône combines 3 grape varieties in a striking blend.
45% Syrah – Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Laudun: Syrah gives the wine dark fruit, pepper, color, spiciness, and extra structure.
40% Grenache Noir – Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Laudun: Grenache Noir brings ripe red fruit, warmth, suppleness, and a full, round attack.
15% Viognier – Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Laudun: Viognier adds floral aromas, a hint of yellow fruit, and extra softness to the blend.
