Château Cissac 2021 Haut-Médoc, France

Château Cissac 2021 is a classic red Bordeaux from the Haut-Médoc, with Cru Bourgeois Supérieur status. This half bottle of 0.375L is ideal when you want to open a serious Left Bank wine in a smaller format. The 2021 vintage showcases a fresher, more elegant side of Cissac, with 14 to 16 months of aging in French oak, a low yield of 25 hl/ha, and the recognizable structure of a Cabernet-driven Médoc.

Vineyards and Region

Château Cissac is located in Cissac-Médoc, in the northern part of the Haut-Médoc, close to Saint-Estèphe and Pauillac.

Location / Origin: The vineyards are situated on a plateau in Cissac-Médoc. This location belongs to the Haut-Médoc, a Left Bank appellation where Cabernet Sauvignon is often the dominant grape.

Classification: Château Cissac holds the Cru Bourgeois Supérieur status. Within the Médoc, this indicates that the estate is classified above the basic Cru Bourgeois category.

Vineyard: The estate works with 60 ha of vineyards and an average vine age of 34 years. This combination provides the wine with a serious foundation, offering sufficient depth and ripeness.

Soil: The vines grow on Garonne gravel. This well-draining soil contributes to the wine's structure, freshness, and classic Médoc grip.

Altitude: The vineyard is located at an altitude of 27.5 m. This is comparable to high points in neighboring appellations such as Saint-Estèphe and Pauillac.

Vinification and aging

The vinification of Château Cissac 2021 combines traditional Médoc precision with modern temperature control.

Harvest & selection: The harvest ran from September 29th to October 16th. The Indian summer in September and October particularly helped the Cabernet grapes achieve interesting ripeness and healthy tension.

Fermentation: Fermentation traditionally takes place in wooden and stainless steel tronconic vats with temperature control. This gives the winemaking team control over extraction, fruit purity, and tannin structure.

Aging / Oak aging: The wine ages for 14 to 16 months, with 25% new oak. This aging adds extra spice, cedar, and roundness, while preserving the fresh character of the 2021 vintage.

Cellar choice: For this vintage, TAVA amphorae and small 20 hl wooden vats were also used. This helps to monitor fruit, texture, and grape expression even more precisely per component.

Grape composition

The 2021 vintage consists of 4 classic Bordeaux grape varieties, with a notable role for Malbec.

57% Cabernet Sauvignon – Haut-Médoc: Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of the wine, providing cassis, grip, length, and the recognizable Left Bank structure.

37% Merlot – Haut-Médoc: Merlot brings roundness, ripe red fruit, and a smoother texture to the mid-palate.
