Vintage Report

De jaargang 2019 in Margaux behaalde een uitmuntende score van 96 punten. De wijnen zijn momenteel nog krachtig en tanninerijk, waardoor ze zich uitstekend lenen voor verdere rijping in de kelder.

When we talk about pure luxury in the wine world, we're talking about none other than Chateau Pouget in the Margaux wine region. The winery boasts a long history dating back to 1748, when François-Antoine Pouget inherited the magnificent château. For over a century and a half, the Pouget family ruled the estate, which endured difficult times like the French Revolution, but also experienced a period of prosperity. In 1855, Chateau Pouget received its fourth Cru Classé designation. This is a source of pride, reserved only for the finest French wineries in the Margaux region. Since 1906, the Guillemet family has owned the estate and its vineyards. This is no stranger to the wine world; with all the love and attention, Chateau Pouget today produces one of the finest Margaux wines.

The old Margaux vineyard of Chateau Pouget

Creating a wine that expresses all the beauty of these gravelly soils, envied the world over. That is Château Pouget's goal, and it has more than succeeded. It all begins with the old vineyards in Margaux. These are planted in a gravelly and limestone soil where the Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot grape varieties thrive. During ripening, close attention is paid to the plants; pruning and, where necessary, bunch removal are important tasks. Once the harvest has fully exploited the rich soil structure, the bunches are harvested entirely by hand. Each bunch is inspected to ensure only the finest are used in this Château Pouget.

Wood aging for the Chateau Pouget Margaux

It proudly bears the "Grand Cru Classe" distinction on the label. And we certainly taste it, but before that, the entire wine is aged for at least 18 months in oak barrels. During this period, where new barrels are partially used, the wine develops a wealth of flavor and aroma. It is a classic Margaux , effortlessly combining finesse and substance. At Château Pouget, special attention is paid to the harvest date, aiming to pick grapes at their optimal ripeness. The grapes are sorted both in the vineyard and at the winery, expressing all the finesse of this magnificent terroir. This translates into the aroma: a classic scent of black fruit with notes of vanilla, licorice, leather, and tobacco. On the palate, this Château Pouget Margaux is stunning, with abundant soft tannins and endless fruit. Beautiful spices, notes of vanilla and cedar, and also a touch of chocolate.
