The fruit of an ideal terroir, Villa Barbi Rosso boasts broad and intense aromas on the nose, which are further refined on the palate with a full and generous, structured, and full-bodied flavor. An ideal companion for red meats and aged cheeses.

The beginning of Villa Barbi

Decugnano dei Barbi is located between Orvieto and Todi, in Umbria. Documents dating from 1212 attest that the land of Santa Maria di Decugnano belonged to the Cathedral of Orvieto, and in 1218, two presbyters, Pietro and Giovanni, dedicated themselves to cultivating vineyards. In 1973, ownership passed to Claudio Barbi from Brescia, whose work enhanced the quality of the estate's wines and earned them prestigious international awards. Today, Enzo Barbi enthusiastically continues his father's work. Decugnano dei Barbi spreads over 54 hectares, 33 of which are vineyards. Unlike the rest of the Orvieto Classico DOC, the soil in Decugnano is of marine origin, created in the Pliocene era. The sandy, light-colored, calcium-rich soil provides an ideal environment for vines. The clay component, though limited, helps retain water during particularly dry seasons, while calcium provides the ideal micronutrients for grape development. In addition to the soil structure, other key factors for growing quality grapes include an ideal microclimate, consistent ventilation, and a wide temperature range between day and night, essential for preserving acidity and aromas.

The intense fruity aromas of Villa Barbi Umbria Rosso

The bunches are harvested between August 20th and September 10th, depending on quality, with yields of approximately 70 quintals per hectare. The grapes are destemmed and pressed. Fermentation takes place in steel vats. After meticulous blending, the wine is bottled and aged for a further six months in the bottle. The aroma displays intense aromas of red and black fruit. The palate is soft and full-bodied, pleasantly fruity. The vineyard is located at an altitude of 320 meters, with soil rich in marl and clay, and abundant fossil shells. The winery is surrounded by the vineyards.
