Vintage Report
The 2021 vintage in South Africa received a score of 94 points from Robert Parker, indicating excellent quality. The wine is currently still youthful and tannic and needs time to develop slowly and fully.
Everything in one bottle, this Meerlust Red, because it's made from the finest and best grape varieties available. Nestled in Stellenbosch, the beautiful old vineyards carefully cultivate the grapes for this red wine. It's the ripest and easiest-to-drink Meerlust wine, which is what winemaker Chris Williams wanted to demonstrate with this red blend. And he succeeded, creating a wine that is pure, round, refined, and exceptionally smooth. The soil for this Meerlust Red consists of granite and clay.
The 150 hectares of vineyards of Meerlust
Meerlust Estate was founded in 1693 and has been owned by the Myburgh family since 1756. On the traditional 150-hectare winery, 110 hectares are planted with vines. The vineyards stretch across a steep strip on the western flank of the Helderberg Mountains, in the south of Stellenbosch. A steady, cool breeze blows over from nearby False Bay. And it is precisely this coolness that allows the grapes to ripen perfectly. The soils consist of alluvial red clay interspersed with weathered granite. From 1978 to 2003, Italian Giogio Dalla Cia worked as winemaker at this established winery and shaped the Bordeaux style of the wines. In 2004, Chris Williams followed in the footsteps of the old master. For Meerlust's winemaker, quality is paramount. Therefore, he continually tastes and adjusts the wines as needed throughout the entire vinification process.Wood bearing for the Meerlust Red
After being hand-harvested, this Red is aged for an impressive 12 months in oak barrels in the Meerlust cellars. Fifty-five percent of the barrels used are new, which is unique in this price range. This gives this Meerlust Red its aromas hints of black currant, spice, and floral notes. The palate is full and powerful, with abundant black fruit, cassis, vanilla, and dark chocolate. It has a long finish. All vineyards undergo a green harvest to enhance concentration and complexity.Product details
