Vintage Report

The Chilean 2021 vintage has received an excellent rating of 93 points from Robert Parker. The wines are still somewhat youthful and tannic, and will develop beautifully with some additional aging.
The pride of Chile, the Camenere grape, is palate-pleasing, as this Escudo Rojo is so refined and silky smooth. A special vineyard in Valle del Rapel was selected for this wine, offering ideal conditions for the Carmenere grape. Valle del Rapel is located in the heart of Chile, 200 km south of the capital, Santiago de Chile. It ranges from the foothills of the Andes to the Pacific coast, making this wine region highly diverse in terms of climate and soil. It is precisely for this reason that the "winemakers" of Baron Philippe de Rothschild Maipo Chile chose Valle del Rapel for the cultivation of certain grape varieties. The partially Mediterranean climate is ideal, among other things, for the production of fully ripe Carmenere grapes.

The old Carmenere vineyard of Escudo Rojo

The soils also contribute to this full-bodied Chilean red wine. The deep loamy soils of the Valle del Rapel produce concentrated and powerful Carmenere grapes. Its elegance and minerality are derived from the siliceous soil textures. Although the grapes for Escudo Rojo Carmenere are hand-picked exclusively in the Valle del Rapel, they are transported to the Bodega Baron Philippe de Rothschild Maipo, Chile, in the Maipo Valley for further processing. After vinification, the young wine is aged there for at least six to eight months in oak barrels. This gives it its full and smooth character.

The smell and taste of the Escudo Rojo Carmenere

What a treat this Chilean red wine is! The aroma reveals a beautiful bouquet of Carmenere grapes. We noted hints of black fruit and a touch of cocoa, sweet spices, vanilla, and toffee. Swirl the wine well in the glass, and it reveals even more aromas of plums and cassis, among other things. The palate is velvety smooth, like a warm bed! Beautiful, silky flavors of cherries, berries, and blackberries, and of course, coffee, mocha, and spices. This Escudo Rojo Carmenere is the finest wine from the winemakers of Baron Philippe de Rothschild.
