Vintage Report

The 2020 vintage in South Australia (Barossa/McLaren Vale) received an excellent rating of 92 points. The wines from this vintage are generally still somewhat youthful and tannic, indicating ongoing aging potential.
This is a true Australian Shiraz. A warm wine bursting with fruit and spice. The d'Arenberg winery has a remarkably long history. It began in 1912 with the acquisition of 78 hectares. It wasn't until 1959 that it first began operating. A wide variety of grape varieties are grown in various vineyards, including Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Tempranillo for red wines, and Riesling, Chambourcin, Viognier, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Marsanne, and Roussanne for white wines. It has been owned by the Osborne family for decades and is recognizable by the distinctive diagonal red stripe on its labels. The wines often also have remarkable names.

Special labels for d'Arenberg wines

The Stump Jump line's label originated from the rumor that the inventor of the Stump Jump plow, which allowed a plowshare to jump over tree roots, had poor eyesight and needed regular tests to ensure he could still operate machinery. Hence, the eye test on the label, similar to the ones you'd find at an optician's. It's a classic test with black letters on a white field, with the text gradually getting smaller. If you can still read the text with an outstretched arm, feel free to pour yourself another drink. If you can no longer see what it says, it's time for bed.

An intense Shiraz from d'Arenberg

The grapes used in this wine are mostly from very old bush vines and underwent gentle crushing, traditional open tank fermentation, basket pressing, and oak aging prior to bottling. This Shiraz is ruby red in color. Upon pouring, the delicious aromas of cherry and blackberry are immediately released. What sets this Shiraz apart is the intensity of this ripe fruit, which is just as intense on the finish as when the wine first touches your tongue. The finish has a mineral-graphite edge that beautifully balances the fruit.
