Vintage Report
The 2020 vintage in South Africa is considered excellent, scoring 92 on the Robert Parker scale. Wines from this year are currently still powerful in their tannins and need time to fully develop.
The Steenberg Catharina Red Blend is an ode to the art of winemaking, bringing together the finest Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah grapes. These grapes are grown under optimal conditions, and when they reach their peak ripeness, they are harvested with precision and care. When these specific grape varieties are combined, they enhance each other uniquely, resulting in a blend overflowing with distinctive aromas.
Steenberg: The Birthplace of the Catharina Red Blend
A stone's throw from Cape Town, nestled in the heart of the winelands, lies Steenberg. This historic farm spans 203 hectares, 60 of which are carefully planted with vines growing between 60 and 160 meters above sea level. Thanks to their northwesterly orientation, the vines enjoy ample sunlight, while the mild, cool sea breezes ensure surprisingly cool temperatures. Sixty percent of these vineyards are planted with white grape varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Sémillon, while the remaining 40% comprises red varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Unique to Steenberg is the cultivation of the Italian Nebbiolo grape. Each wine produced here, particularly the Steenberg Catharina Red Blend, is known for its remarkable acidity and vibrant fruit expression. Each vintage of Steenberg Catharina Red Blend is a masterpiece in its own right, with only the finest barrels selected. The Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah grapes are vinified separately in a traditional style. These carefully harvested grapes are fully destemmed and gently crushed upon arrival at the winery, after which the juice ferments on the skins for 15 to 20 days. After pressing, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels where it ages for 18 months, giving Steenberg Catharina Red Blend its signature flavor and complexity. The Taste Explosion of Steenberg Catharina Red Blend
The Steenberg Catharina Red Blend is a symphony of flavors and aromas. Powerful and rich in character, this wine treats you to aromas of cherries, vanilla, coffee, and dark chocolate. These enticing aromas open the way to a mouthful of ripe red and black fruits such as raspberries, blackcurrants, and black cherries. Its velvety texture, harmoniously balanced with vibrant acidity, leads to an impressive, lingering finish. While the Steenberg Catharina Red Blend is a treat on its own, it is even more harmonious when paired with spicy dishes.Product details
