A century and a half ago, the royal houses of England, France, and Russia were Cote Rotie's biggest fans. This French wine must contain at least 80 percent Syrah and may be supplemented with 20 percent Viognier. The Guigal Cote Rotie boasts a whopping 96 percent Syrah. This gives this French red wine more power and character than Cote Rotie from neighboring wineries.

Wood aging for the Guigal Cote Rotie

Etienne Guigal's adventure began in 1946 when he founded the Guigal winery in the small village of Ampuis in the northern Rhône Valley. His son succeeded him decades later, radically changing the estate's format. He acquired several vineyards, and the production of highly acclaimed wines began. The process of transforming the delicate grapes into a beautiful glass of Guigal Cote Rotie is a complex one. This makes this glass of red wine all the more special. After being harvested by hand, the grapes are fermented. The juice is then aged in oak barrels in Guigal's cellars. Only after a minimum of 36 months and with the winemaker's approval does the Cote Rotie leave the Guigal cellars.

The result is stunning. The first thing you smell is spices. Then you smell again, and you also detect a hint of berries. The flavor palette is broad and diverse. Red berries, raspberries, and blueberries make up the taste. Vanilla and oak notes complete the whole. The full-bodied character remains pleasant to drink thanks to the fine tannins and pleasant acidity. A true Topper with a capital T. Guigal Cote Rotie is truly the king of the Rhône region.
