Rías Baixas wine region: Albariño, climate and soils

What is Rías Baixas?

Rías Baixas is a protected wine region in Galicia, on the Atlantic side of Northwest Spain. The designation of origin (DOP) consists of five separate subzones: Val do Salnés, Condado do Tea, O Rosal, Soutomaior, and Ribeira do Ulla. Together, they follow parts of the coast, the lower course of the Miño, and the Ulla valley.^[1] The designation began in 1980 as Denominación Específica, a specific designation of origin, and was recognized in 1988 as a Denominación de Origen, a designation of origin.^[2]

Scale and production

During the 2025 harvest, 4,808 hectares of productive vineyard, 4,960 grape growers, and 161 winemaking companies were active. A total of 47,512,786 kilograms of grapes were harvested.^[3]

The control organization verified 27,117,841 liters of wine in the 2025 calendar year, or 271,178 hectoliters after dividing by 100. In that same year, the regulatory council issued 36,157,121 numbered guarantee seals. The latter figure measures packaging released for sale and is therefore not the same as the quantity of wine produced or verified.^[4]

Because the five subzones are not contiguous, there is no single official length or width. A calculation using the WGS84 bounding box around the legally designated municipalities and parishes amounts to approximately 107 kilometers from north to south and 64 kilometers from west to east.^[5][6]

Atlantic climate and granite soils

The ocean defines the character of the area. The climate is mild and humid, with approximately 1,300 millimeters of rainfall per year and temperatures that generally range between 10 and 25 °C. The vineyards are mostly low-lying; altitudes above 300 meters are exceptional. Granite and its weathered sandy soils dominate, alongside slate-like and alluvial zones.^[7][8]

This high trellising helps air circulate around the clusters in the humid climate. The combination of coolness, rain, and well-draining soils helps the grapes retain their fresh acidity.^[9]

Albariño and other permitted grapes

Albariño accounted for 46,086,340 kilograms of grapes in the 2025 harvest, or 96.99% of the DOP total of 47,512,786 kilograms. White grapes together made up 99.5% of that harvest; these are harvest shares and not shares of the planted area.^[10]

In addition to Albariño, the white varieties Treixadura, Loureira, Caíño Blanco, Torrontés, Godello, and Ratiño Gallega are permitted. The eight permitted red varieties are Caíño Tinto, Espadeiro, Loureiro Tinto, Sousón, Mencía, Brancellao, Pedral, and Castañal.^[11][12]

What wine styles are produced?

The most famous style is dry white wine, often made entirely from Albariño. The regulations also provide for barrel-aged white wine, red wine, and quality white or red sparkling wine that undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle.^[13]

Young Albariño from Rías Baixas usually tastes lively and precise, with citrus, green apple, white stone fruit, and sometimes a salty or herbal impression. Fuller examples can age longer on the fine lees or use subtle oak, without losing their fresh backbone.

The five subzones in brief

Val do Salnés lies close to the Atlantic coast and forms the historical heart around Cambados. O Rosal and Condado do Tea are located further south towards the Miño, where it is often slightly warmer. Soutomaior is small and located around the municipality of the same name. Ribeira do Ulla reaches northward along the Ulla and includes parts of both Pontevedra and A Coruña.^[14]

What to eat with Rías Baixas?

The combination of fresh acidity and aromatic tension naturally pairs well with shellfish, oysters, mussels, grilled fish, and octopus. Raw fish marinated in citrus, Japanese rice dishes, light Spanish tapas, soft goat cheese, and vegetable dishes with fennel or green herbs also work well.

Serving and storing

Serve a young Albariño at around 8–10 °C. A glass that is broader than a narrow aperitif flute allows the bouquet to better express itself. Fresh base wines are usually focused on their liveliness; more serious wines with aging on fine lees or in oak can gain texture and complexity over a few years.
