From vineyard to bottle

The origin, grapes and craftsmanship behind this wine.

Since 1986, this white wine has served as the recognizable calling card of Bodegas Martín Códax, with a pure and energetic style that aptly translates the Atlantic character of Val do Salnés. Serve it as an aperitif or with shellfish, grilled fish, and light rice dishes.

The selected plots are located in Val do Salnés, the historic coastal region around Cambados within Rías Baixas.

  • Location / Origin: Val do Salnés is situated on the Atlantic coast of Galicia. Its proximity to the sea and estuaries gives the vineyards a distinct maritime climate and contributes to their characteristic freshness and subtle saline tension.
  • Altitude: Most vineyards are located close to the sea on low, shallow plots at a maximum of 300 m above sea level.
  • Soil: Sandy, mineral-rich soils with a granite subsoil drain excess water easily and support a crisp, bright wine style.
  • Climate & Influences: The Atlantic climate brings mild temperatures, sea breezes, and approximately 1200 mm of precipitation per year. The drier summer period allows the grapes sufficient time to ripen evenly.
  • Vineyard management: Many vines grow on pergolas approximately 2 m high. This traditional horizontal trellising promotes air circulation around the clusters and limits the influence of the humid climate.

Precise selection and cool processing keep the natural vibrancy of the fruit at the center.

  • Harvest & Selection: Harvesting is done entirely by hand. Only carefully selected grapes from the plots of affiliated winegrowers are used for this cuvée.
  • Fermentation: Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. This keeps the primary fruit aromas impeccably pure and allows the wine to retain its fresh, floral character.

The wine is made entirely from the grape variety that is inextricably linked to Rías Baixas.

  • 100% Albariño – Val do Salnés: Albariño provides vibrant acidity, citrus fruit, floral aromas, and sufficient structure for a fresh wine with a remarkably broad and enveloping mouthfeel.

More about Martin Codax

Bodegas Martín Códax was founded in 1985 from the shared ambition of 50 winegrowers who wanted to showcase the potential of their local viticulture. More than 500 winegrowing families are now involved in the project. The name refers to the 13th-century Galician troubadour of the same name, while collaboration, research, sustainability, and the protection of Galician culture remain at the core of the winery.
