What is Nebbiolo?
Nebbiolo is a dark-skinned grape variety from Piedmont. It buds early, ripens late, and is generally harvested in October. The grape has high demands regarding the location and exposure of the vineyard.[1]
Where does the grape grow?
Nebbiolo is primarily associated with Piedmont and the hills of the Langhe. Barolo and Barbaresco are its most famous origins; Barolo DOCG is made entirely from Nebbiolo.[2][3]
Why is the vineyard so important?
Nebbiolo reacts strongly to altitude, sun exposure, soil, and microclimate. In the Langhe, well-exposed slopes with limestone and tufa are considered important growing sites. As a result, wines from nearby villages or slopes can differ significantly.[4]
What does Nebbiolo taste like?
Red fruit, roses, herbs, high acidity, and firm tannins are recurring characteristics. The color can be relatively transparent, even when the wine has a lot of structure. With aging, earthy and more complex aromas can develop, but the precise evolution varies per wine.
How do you choose a Nebbiolo wine?
A young Langhe Nebbiolo can be more accessible than Barolo or Barbaresco. If you are looking for more power and aging potential, look at the origin, vintage, and producer, and take into account aeration, food pairing, and possibly additional bottle aging.
