Maps and location
Piedmont is a wine region in northwestern Italy and the name of one specific DOC. In this dossier, we refer to the broad wine region: the official viticultural zones with a combined total of 19 DOCG and 41 DOC appellations.[1] The administrative boundary is therefore not the same as the wine map.
What makes Piedmont a wine region?
Viticulture does not form a continuous blanket over the entire region. The focus lies in the hilly area south and east of Turin, alongside smaller zones at the foot of the Alps. Official data for 2024 mentions 43,670 hectares suitable for wine with a designation of origin, of which 36,193 hectares were actually registered. Production amounted to 2,051,630.79 hectoliters; 88 percent fell under a designation of origin. Furthermore, the regional sector report published in April 2025 mentions approximately 11,000 active companies producing DOC and DOCG wine. The 2024 production volume is mathematically equivalent to approximately 273.6 million 0.75-liter bottles: 2,051,630.79 hectoliters multiplied by 100, divided by 0.75. This is a converted volume and not a reported number of bottled units.[2]
On labels, pay attention to the difference between the region and the designation of origin. Piedmont DOC is one specific DOC within the regional system and has its own rules for grapes and wine styles.[3] Barolo, Barbaresco, Gavi, Asti, and Roero are other, separate appellations.
Where are the most important wine areas located?
Langhe and Roero
Around Alba and the Tanaro river lie the hills of Langhe and Roero. Here, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and Arneis are central. The landscape consists of vineyard slopes, villages, castles, and cellars. Parts of Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato have formed a joint UNESCO World Heritage site since 2014.[4]

Monferrato, Astigiano, and Alessandrino
To the east and southeast of Turin, the vineyards spread out around Asti and Alessandria. Barbera, Moscato Bianco, Brachetto, and Grignolino are common here. Further to the southeast lie Gavi, with Cortese, and the Colli Tortonesi, where Timorasso is an important white grape.
Alto Piemonte and the western zones
North of the Po river lie smaller, scattered vineyard areas around Novara, Vercelli, and Biella. Nebbiolo is also called Spanna here and is often supplemented with local grapes. In Canavese, Erbaluce plays a leading role; towards the Susa Valley, the vineyards are much smaller in scale. The detailed map shows the official plots that were suitable for wine with a designation of origin in 2025. The rounded bounding box of that geodata measures approximately 165 kilometers from east to west and 150 kilometers from north to south. This is a calculated measure of dispersion for the vineyard plots, not an administrative dimension.[5]
Climate and soil differ by sub-region
Piedmont does not have a single soil or climate profile that applies to all sixty appellations. The official regulations for Langhe DOC describe a varied interplay of marl, limestone, sand, and clay soils.[6] In Roero, the vineyard slopes lie partly on highly consolidated sandy marine deposits.[7] Altitude, rainfall, and temperature must therefore be assessed for each individual appellation.
Grapes and wine styles
Regional planting data for 2018 mentions 44,449 hectares of vineyards. Divided by that total regional area, Barbera accounts for 24.6 percent, Moscato Bianco for 23.4 percent, Nebbiolo for 12.7 percent, and Dolcetto for 9.5 percent of the plantings; the percentages were calculated by us from the published hectares and rounded to one decimal place.[8] A regional overview from 2019 divides approximately 43,000 hectares into roughly 60 percent red grapes and 40 percent white grapes.[9] In the registry upon which the planting report was based, 73 grape varieties were listed as suitable for Piedmont in 2018. Which grapes and ratios are actually permitted differs per DOC or DOCG.[10]
Piedmont is famous for red wine, but the selection is much broader. Nebbiolo generally yields fragrant, tannin-rich wines with fresh acidity. Barbera combines lively acidity with ripe fruit, while Dolcetto usually tastes smoother and more direct. The region also boasts historic grapes such as Brachetto, Freisa, and Grignolino.[11]
In white wines, styles range from dry Cortese, Arneis, Erbaluce, and Timorasso to aromatic Moscato Bianco. Piedmont produces still red, white, and rosé wine, as well as sparkling wine, sweet wine, and passito: sweet wine made from dried grapes. The appellation name on the label determines which grapes, yields, and production methods are permitted.

Choosing and tasting Piedmont
If you are looking for structure and aging potential, look for Nebbiolo from an appropriate appellation. For a fruitier profile, Barbera and Dolcetto are logical starting points. Those who want white wine can choose between the fresh style of Cortese or Arneis and the aromatic, often slightly sweet style of Moscato. The wine menus below follow the current order of the Piedmont collection.
This dossier is intended as a regional reference. The existing article Piedmont: more than Barolo & Barbaresco remains the narrative deep-dive; as such, both pages have their own search intent.
