What is Merlot?
Merlot is a dark-skinned grape variety from Southwest France, with Bordeaux as its historic heart. The grape is a natural cross between Cabernet Franc and Magdeleine Noire des Charentes and ripens relatively early.[1]
Where does the grape grow?
In Bordeaux, Merlot is particularly important on the Right Bank, including around Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, and Fronsac. Outside of France, the grape is found in various regions, including Napa Valley, Colchagua Valley, and Stellenbosch.[2]
Is Merlot used only on its own?
No. Merlot can be made as a single-varietal wine, but it is also a classic partner in blends. In Bordeaux, it is often combined with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with each grape contributing a different element of structure, freshness, and fruit.[3]
What does Merlot taste like?
Plum, cherry, and a round texture are often associated with Merlot. Nevertheless, the style varies from light and juicy to concentrated and long-lived. Climate, soil, yield, ripeness, and oak aging make a big difference.[4]
How do you choose a Merlot wine?
If you are looking for smooth and fruity, choose a young wine with limited oak influence. For more structure and aging potential, origin, producer, and aging are more important than just the grape name.
