What is the official demarcation of Marlborough?

Marlborough is a registered geographical indication for wine in the northeast of the South Island. The official boundary includes not only Marlborough but also the Kaikōura district. This means the wine GI is broader than a reference to only the contemporary administrative region.^[1][2]

According to the 2026 forecast, Marlborough has 32,191 hectares of planted vineyard, of which 31,603 hectares are producing grapes. This accounts for 73 percent of New Zealand's planted vineyard area. The forecast is based on the 2025 Biosecurity Vineyard Register, which lists 1,134 active vineyards for Marlborough; these are vineyard locations and not a count of producers.^[3]

The official boundary data covers a bounding box of approximately 219 kilometers from north to south and 143 kilometers from east to west. These distances are calculated using the haversine method between the extreme latitude and longitude coordinates; they are not driving distances.^[4]

Why does viticulture thrive here?

Marlborough combines abundant sunshine with a cool climate, limited rainfall, and clear diurnal temperature variations. Mountains provide shelter, while coastal influence and wind provide cooling. These conditions help grapes ripen slowly and retain their acidity.^[5][6]

Soils vary by wine zone. In Wairau, well-draining river deposits and gravel dominate in many places. The Southern Valleys have more clay on the slopes, while Awatere is generally cooler, drier, and windier. This allows one region to produce diverse wine styles.^[7][8]

What grapes and styles are associated with Marlborough?

Sauvignon Blanc as a distinguishing feature

Sauvignon Blanc accounts for approximately 85.0 percent of the 32,191 hectares of planted vineyard in Marlborough, according to the 2026 forecast.^[9] The wines are often characterized by citrus, gooseberry, tropical fruit, and a pronounced fresh acidity. In addition to the classic, vibrant style, producers also make richer wines with lees aging or in wood.^[10]

Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay

In the same forecast, Pinot Noir accounts for 6.6 percent, Pinot Gris 3.7 percent, and Chardonnay 3.4 percent of the planted area.^[11] Pinot Noir benefits from cooler sites and clay-rich soils, with styles ranging from light and fragrant to more robust and spicy. Chardonnay appears both crisp and fresh, and rounder, with fermentation or aging in barrels.^[12][13]

Grouped by grape color, the projected planting for 2026 totals approximately 30,008 hectares of white grapes (93.2 percent) and 2,183 hectares of red grapes (6.8 percent). This is calculated by adding the regional areas per grape variety from the report and dividing by 32,191 hectares.^[14]

The three main wine zones

Wairau Valley, Southern Valleys, and Awatere Valley are the three main wine zones within Marlborough; they are not separately registered geographical indications.^[15]

Wairau Valley

The wide Wairau Valley around Blenheim forms the heart of regional viticulture. The combination of river gravel, sun, and shelter often produces ripe fruit and aromatic intensity.^[16]

Southern Valleys

To the south of Wairau are valleys and slopes with more clay. This wine zone is important for Pinot Noir, but also produces Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.^[17]

Awatere Valley

South of Wairau, Awatere is cooler, drier, and generally windier. Wines here often show a tighter profile, with fresh acidity and herbaceous nuances.^[18]

Production and aging

Stainless steel helps preserve the fresh aromas of Sauvignon Blanc. For some wines, especially Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, producers also use fermentation on lees and oak barrels to add texture, spiciness, and complexity.^[19]
