Alentejo: wine region, origin, grapes and landscape

What exactly is the Alentejo wine region?

Alentejo is not a single, undivided designation of origin. The Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) Alentejo consists of eight demarcated sub-regions. The broader Protected Geographical Indication (IGP) Alentejano encompasses all municipalities in the districts of Portalegre, Évora, and Beja. A wine can therefore come from the same large wine region but appear on the market under a different origin level.^[1][2]

Where is Alentejo located?

The wine region is situated in southeastern Portugal, inland from Lisbon and north of the Algarve. The first map shows the full Portuguese context; the second zooms in on the legal IGP demarcation and marks the location of the eight DOP sub-regions.^[3]

Based on the legal IGP demarcation and official district boundaries from CAOP 2025, the bounding box covers an estimated 260 kilometers from north to south and 166 kilometers from west to east. These dimensions are calculated in the official EPSG:3763 coordinate system and describe the maximum geographical extent, not the contiguous vineyard area.^[4][5]

The eight DOP sub-regions

DOP Alentejo is divided into Portalegre, Borba, Redondo, Reguengos, Évora, Vidigueira, Moura, and Granja-Amareleja. These names are geographical sub-regions within the designation of origin; they are not a quality ranking.^[6]

The first Alentejo designations of origin were regulated in 1988. IGP Alentejano was recognized in 2010, succeeding the geographical table wine designation that had been in use since 1992.^[7][8]

Alentejo in numbers

The Portuguese viticulture register counted 26,067 hectares of vineyard in Alentejo on July 31, 2024: 14,837 hectares with DOP potential, 7,392 hectares with IGP potential, and 3,838 hectares without DOP or IGP potential.^[9]

For 2023, the regional commission registered 250 wine producers with declared production, alongside 1,880 grape growers and 260 wine companies certifying wine as DOP Alentejo or IGP Alentejano. The definitions do not overlap one-to-one and are therefore listed separately.^[10]

The total wine production in the 2024/2025 campaign amounted to 1,134,558 hectoliters. Converted, this is an estimated 151.3 million standard 0.75-liter bottles: 1,134,558 hectoliters × 100 liters ÷ 0.75 liters. This is a volume equivalent, not a count of actual filled bottles.^[11]

Climate, altitude, and soil

The climate is predominantly Mediterranean with continental influence: warm, dry springs and summers and a strong seasonal effect. The average annual rainfall is around 550 to 650 millimeters for a large part of the region, 750 to 850 millimeters around Borba, and 900 to 1,000 millimeters around Portalegre.^[12]

The Serra de São Mamede reaches 1,025 meters. This is a landscape altitude, not a general vineyard altitude; within the Portalegre DOP sub-region, locations above 700 meters are actually excluded. Relief near São Mamede, Ossa, and Portel locally provides cooler conditions and additional variation.^[13][14]

The soil is not uniform either. Granite and schist occur alongside clay-limestone and various sedimentary deposits. This mosaic explains why it makes more sense to speak of multiple growing sites within Alentejo than of a single flavor profile for the entire region.^[15]

Which grapes define Alentejo?

The 2018 planting inventory counted 21,961.5 hectares: 17,083.1 hectares of red grapes (77.8%), 4,872.2 hectares of white grapes (22.2%), and 6.2 hectares registered separately as rosé.^[16]

White grapes

Within the white plantings of 2018, the largest shares were: Antão Vaz 25.7%, Síria/Roupeiro 17.9%, Arinto 15.9%, Rabo de Ovelha 5.4%, Fernão Pires 5.4%, and Verdelho 5.0%. The denominator is therefore exclusively the white planting of 4,872.2 hectares.^[17]

Red grapes

Within the red plantings of 2018, the largest shares were: Aragonez 24.8%, Trincadeira 17.7%, Alicante Bouschet 14.8%, Syrah 11.6%, Touriga Nacional 7.6%, and Castelão 5.9%. The denominator is the red planting of 17,083.1 hectares.^[18]

What wine styles can be found there?

In addition to red, white, and rosé wine, sparkling and fortified styles are also permitted. A special local tradition is vinho de talha: wine fermented and stored in large earthenware vessels. The origin name therefore says more about source and regulations than about one uniform taste.^[20][21]

What does Alentejo mean on the label?

DOP Alentejo refers to the protected designation of origin and its production conditions; the name of a sub-region can further refine the origin. IGP Alentejano is the protected geographical indication with a broader geographical framework and its own regulations. Control and certification apply to both protected origins, but DOP and IGP are not a simple taste or quality ladder.^[22][23][24]
