Weedenborn Sauvignon Blanc Réserve 2024
French oak gives this Sauvignon Blanc an extra dimension: alongside vibrant citrus, notes of creaminess, fine smoke, and spicy depth emerge. Gesine Roll crafts her Réserve from a careful selection of the estate's oldest Sauvignon plantings and most highly regarded vineyards. The 2024 vintage combines that concentration with floral refinement and beautifully ripe acidity. A characterful white wine in which Burgundian inspiration blends beautifully with the fresh, precise style of Rheinhessen.
Vineyards and region
The higher-altitude plots offer a relatively cool environment for a long, gradual ripening process.
-
Location / origin: The grapes come from the upper part of the Morstein vineyard near Westhofen, in the Wonnegau area of southern Rheinhessen. The plots are situated around 260 m above sea level, close to Monzernheim, the home of Weedenborn.
-
Soil: Around the Morstein, the topsoil consists of clay marl with limestone inclusions, sitting atop a subsoil of solid limestone. The water-bearing limestone layers can contribute to the vines' water supply even during prolonged dry periods.
-
Climate & influences: On the heights towards Monzernheim, wind provides extra cooling. It is cooler here than on the lower slopes of Westhofen, which allows the grapes to ripen later and retain their natural freshness.
Vinification and aging
Spontaneous fermentation and long-term yeast contact define the composition of this structured Réserve.
-
Fermentation: The alcoholic fermentation occurs spontaneously, using the naturally present yeasts. The natural yeast flora handles the conversion of grape sugars into alcohol.
-
Aging / wood treatment: The wine is aged for 18 months in new French oak on the full lees. This prolonged yeast contact contributes to the creamy texture and cohesion, while the wood provides a refined smoky and spicy frame. The aging process thus brings additional breadth and depth to the flavor.
Grape composition
The aromatic intensity of a single grape variety is given a rich, distinctly dry expression here.
-
100% Sauvignon Blanc – Westhofen: Sauvignon Blanc brings citrus, floral aromas, and a fine spiciness. The natural acidity directs the full mouthfeel and keeps the concentrated flavor vibrant, even after long barrel aging.
Tasting notes and serving tips
Bright golden yellow with a green hue and aromas of elderflower, orange, black pepper, and fine smoke. The palate is dry and concentrated, with a creamy texture, fresh citrus, and subtle tropical fruit tones. Ripe acidity and refined grip give the long finish tension and structure.
-
Serving temperature: Serve at 10–12 °C in a large white wine glass, so that the spicy aromas and creamy texture can unfold while the citrus remains fresh.
-
Dishes: Pour alongside pan-fried turbot with beurre blanc, roast chicken with tarragon cream sauce, scallops with fennel, or ravioli with ricotta and sage butter. The full texture pairs beautifully with creamy preparations, while the fresh acidity provides balance.

More information about Weingut Weedenborn
An initial planting by Udo Mattern marked the beginning of Weedenborn's Sauvignon story. After being introduced to the grape in South Tyrol, he wanted to discover what it could show on the family estate in Monzernheim. His daughter Gesine Roll expanded that experiment into a distinct specialty. She learned the winemaking craft at Bassermann-Jordan in the Pfalz and gained experience at Vergelegen in South Africa, where the estate's French orientation particularly appealed to her. Back in Rheinhessen, she developed her own style with an emphasis on precision, aromatic refinement, and carefully dosed wood. Falstaff named her Winemaker of the Year in the 2024 Weinguide Deutschland.
