Weedenborn Riesling 2025
Ripe peach and crisp green apple are given a refined, spicy frame in this dry Riesling. Gesine Roll applies the same hand-picked attention and careful cellar work to her estate wines as well, allowing a beautiful structure to emerge alongside the expressive fruit. The appeal lies in that combination: wonderfully juicy and refreshing, with a fine grip and a softly spicy finish. An inviting introduction to the Riesling side of Weedenborn.
Vineyards and region
This wine is one of the Gutsweine, the estate wines with which Weedenborn makes its house style accessible.
-
Location / origin: The wine comes from Rheinhessen in Germany. Weedenborn is based in Monzernheim, in the southern Wonnegau sub-region, close to the vineyard slopes of Westhofen.
-
Soil: The grapes grow on calcareous marl and loess loam. This combination brings together lime-rich soil with fine loam and clay particles that can retain moisture, a useful buffer for the vines during drier periods.
-
Climate & influences: The higher-altitude vineyards around Monzernheim benefit from cooling winds. Ripening in this environment is more gradual than on the lower slopes near Westhofen, allowing for a harmonious blend of aromatic development and the preservation of natural freshness.
Vinification and maturation
Processing prior to pressing provides extra aromatic depth; during fermentation, the focus remains on the fruit.
-
Harvest & processing: The grapes are hand-picked, destemmed, and lightly crushed. The juice and skins are then left in contact for about 18 hours before the must is pressed. This skin maceration helps to release aromatic compounds from the grape skins.
-
Fermentation: Alcoholic fermentation takes place primarily in stainless steel tanks. These neutral fermentation vessels do not add any wood aromas, allowing space for the fresh fruit expression and the inherent character of the grape.
Grape composition
The natural acidity forms an important part of the lively, dry style.
-
Riesling – Rheinhessen: Riesling is a slow-ripening grape capable of maintaining a distinct, crisp acidity. This directs the juicy peach and apple fruit and supports the refined structure of this wine.
Tasting notes and serving tips
Bright light gold with a green sheen and aromas of peach, pear, and green apple. The taste is dry and juicy, with lively acidity, a fine grip, and a mineral impression. A soft, spicy finish elegantly rounds off the fresh fruit.
-
Serving temperature: Serve at 8–10 °C to keep the fruit aromas clear and allow the lively acidity to shine.
-
Food pairing: Pour alongside oven-baked trout, white asparagus with ham and butter sauce, chicken salad with apple, or a classic schnitzel with lemon. The juicy acidity provides a fresh counterpart to these soft and savory dishes.
More information about Weingut Weedenborn
Precision runs like a common thread through Gesine Roll's work. During her winemaking studies at Bassermann-Jordan in the Pfalz, she learned from cellar master Uli Mell how important accuracy in the cellar is. A work period at Vergelegen in South Africa deepened her interest in French-inspired wine styles. Back at the family estate in Monzernheim, she built upon the initiatives of her father, Udo Mattern, and developed her own course with a focus on refinement and structure. Her Sauvignon Blancs brought the house great recognition, but Riesling also has a permanent place in the assortment. Falstaff distinguished her as Winzerin des Jahres (Winemaker of the Year) in the Weinguide Deutschland 2024.
