Weedenborn Chardonnay 2025

A creamy texture and refined woody spice are given a lively, German signature here. In her Gutswein, the estate's entry-level line, Gesine Roll already demonstrates how beautifully Burgundian inspiration and Rheinhessen freshness go hand in hand. Hand-picked fruit and extended lees contact give this Chardonnay a polished, layered style, in which juiciness and suppleness beautifully complement one another. An inviting introduction to the white wines of Weedenborn, with enough structure and mineral tension to remain engaging at the table as well.

Vineyards and region

The hilly south of Rheinhessen forms the home base for this Chardonnay.

  • Location / origin: Weedenborn operates around Monzernheim and Westhofen, in the Wonnegau area within the German wine region of Rheinhessen. Monzernheim is situated above the well-known limestone slopes of Westhofen, in a landscape with distinct elevation changes.

  • Soil: The vines for this Chardonnay are planted on calcareous marl, where lime and clay meet. The clay fraction can retain moisture, thus providing a useful water reserve during drier periods.

  • Altitude & climate: Around Monzernheim, the vineyards reach up to 280 m above sea level. The open location and regular winds ensure relatively cool conditions, allowing the grapes to ripen gradually and retain their natural acidity.

Vinification and maturation

Careful processing before pressing and patience during maturation build both aromatic depth and texture.

  • Harvest & selection: The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed, and lightly crushed. Subsequently, the juice and skins remain in contact for about 18 hours before the must is pressed. This skin maceration helps extract additional aromatic compounds from the grape skins.

  • Maturation / wood aging: The maturation process combines used tonneaux, larger wooden barrels, and stainless steel tanks. Extended contact with the lees provides extra roundness and a creamy mouthfeel, while the wooden barrels add a fine spicy frame. The combination with stainless steel also keeps the juicy fruit expression emphatically present.

Grape composition

The choice for predominantly French clones aligns with the estate's Burgundian inspiration.

  • Chardonnay – Rheinhessen: Chardonnay gives the wine its natural breadth and supple structure, with sufficient acidity for a fresh balance. Furthermore, the grape lends itself well to lees contact and wood aging, which allows fruit, texture, and subtle spice to form a layered whole.

Tasting notes and serving tips

The nose opens with ripe pear and apricot, complemented by fresh citrus and refined oak spice. On the palate, the wine is dry and juicy, with a creamy entry and lively acidity. A mineral impression and fine wood notes add extra depth to the fresh finish.

  • Serving temperature: Serve this Chardonnay at 10–12 °C, so that the creamy texture and woody spice can unfold while the fruit remains lively.

  • Dishes: Pour alongside roasted chicken with lemon and thyme, pan-seared salmon with a light cream sauce, mushroom risotto, or a vegetable quiche. The soft texture matches creamy preparations, while the acidity provides a fresh counterpart.

Awards

  • 91 points, James Suckling — 2022 vintage, reviewed in 2023: Stuart Pigott rated this Chardonnay at the Outstanding level, the category that starts at 90 points for James Suckling.

  • 90 points, Falstaff — 2023 vintage, reviewed in 2024: Ulrich Sautter appreciated pear, apple, honeydew melon, and lime zest, with fine spicy and nutty nuances. The juicy fruit, integrated acidity, and harmonious length were particularly noteworthy.

More information about Weingut Weedenborn

Gesine Roll built upon her parents' family estate in Monzernheim, where her father, Udo Mattern, initiated the later specialization in Sauvignon Blanc. She learned the craft herself at Bassermann-Jordan in the Pfalz and gained experience at Vergelegen in South Africa. Her interest in French-inspired wine styles grew there as well. Back at Weedenborn, she developed her own course, focusing on precise vineyard work, refined aromas, and carefully dosed wood. Her craftsmanship clearly extends beyond Sauvignon Blanc: Chardonnay holds an important place within the range. Falstaff awarded her the title Winemaker of the Year in the Weinguide Deutschland 2024.
