Nore Syrah Pays d’Oc, France
Nore Syrah is a dark red South French Syrah wine, originating from the steep southern slope of Pic de Nore. This mountain, at 1211 m, is the highest point of the Montagne Noire and marks the transition between Atlantic influences in the west and the Mediterranean climate in the south. It is precisely this unique location between Carcassonne and Narbonne that gives this Syrah its rich, spicy style with blackberries, blackcurrants, pepper, and a full, powerful finish.
Vineyards and region
The origin of Nore Syrah lies in Pays d’Oc, on the south side of the Montagne Noire.
• Location / Origin: The Syrah grapes grow on the very steep southern slope of the Pic de Nore, northwest of Carcassonne. The Montagne Noire protects the area between Carcassonne and Narbonne from cooler northern winds.
• Altitude: The Pic de Nore reaches an altitude of 1211 m, making it the highest point of the Montagne Noire. The vineyards are located on the flanks of this mountain, where altitude, slope, and sun together ensure ripe fruit with spicy tension.
• Climate & Influences: The Montagne Noire forms a natural dividing line between Atlantic and Mediterranean air currents. This clash often creates dark clouds on the northern side, while the southern slope benefits from the warmer Mediterranean influence.
• Landscape: Among the garrigue on the southern slope, the vineyards are laid out on steep plots. Garrigue is the typical Mediterranean vegetation with fragrant plants and shrubs, which pairs well with the peppery and spicy style of Syrah from Southern France.
Grape composition
This red Pays d’Oc wine is made entirely from Syrah.
• Syrah – Pays d’Oc: Syrah gives Nore its dark color, aromas of blackberries and blackcurrants, peppery spiciness, and full structure. In the south of France, this grape often gains more ripeness and power, while its location near the Montagne Noire can provide extra freshness and tension.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
Nore Syrah has a rich aroma and taste with blackberries, blackcurrants, and pepper. The wine is full-bodied and powerful, with a dark fruit core and a spicy undertone. The finish remains firm, warm, and long.
• Serving temperature: Serve this Syrah at 16–18 °C, so that the dark fruit, peppery spiciness, and full structure come together beautifully.
• Dishes: Delicious with red meat, game, liver, mushrooms, and strong-flavored cheeses.
More information about Pic de Nore
The name Pic de Nore refers to a special place in the Montagne Noire. Nore is associated with noir and ore, a reference to the dark clouds around the summit and the gold that was mined here for centuries. Gold and silver had been mined on this slope since the Middle Ages, until the last gold mine in Western Europe, near Salsigne, closed in 2003.
