The 2022 vintage in South Africa received an excellent rating of 92 points from Robert Parker. The wines are currently still youthful and tannic, indicating good aging potential.

The label of Nieuwe Haarlem Pinotage immediately transports you to the past – the Golden Age! A sturdy ship on a turbulent sea. But not just any ship. We're talking about the Nieuwe Haarlem, a key element in Dutch history. The Nieuwe Haarlem transported many high-ranking officers of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) from Amsterdam to the rest of the world. In 1947, the ship ran aground in Table Bay. The discovery of the area led to the first settlements in South Africa, founded by Jan van Riebeeck. Thanks to him, Dutch trade flourished and South African viticulture was launched.

The wines of New Haarlem

Nieuwe Haarlem was founded as a tribute to the Dutch trading spirit and its significance for South African winemaking. South African winemaking, in particular, is put on a pedestal with the wines of Nieuwe Haarlem. The Pinotage and Chenin Blanc have been given the spotlight. Literally, because on the vineyards in Malmesbury, towards the Swartland region, the sun is working overtime. Here in the vineyards, an hour's drive north of Cape Town, the conditions are ideal for winegrowing. Pinotage, in particular, has a special bond with South Africa. Nearly a century ago, this grape was developed at the University of Stellenbosch. In just under a century, it became the poster child for top-quality South African wines.
