The 2022 vintage in South Africa is rated with an excellent score of 92 points. The wines from this year are characterized as still youthful and possess good aging potential.

This seductive wine, made from Chenin Blanc grapes, is a tribute to Nederburg's founder. Various winemaking techniques were used to create a vibrant, rich, and layered, food-friendly wine with character. And it's a success!

The 'leader' of Nederburg

The Heritage Heroes collection honors some of the legends who have shaped Nederburg and its history as one of South Africa's most award-winning wineries. Each of these wines is crafted with a focus on innovation, from technique to varietal selection, to offer wine lovers a broader and more nuanced spectrum of flavors. The Anchorman (The Leader) is a special Chenin Blanc named after Nederburg's founder, Philippus Wolvaart, who purchased the farm in 1791 and planted Chenin Blanc, among other varietals. He had the vision and courage to tame a wilderness and cultivate great wine. The grapes are partially fermented in 300- and 500-liter barrels. A second component is fermented in stainless steel tanks, while a third is fermented in very old, large barrels. And, uniquely, the remainder is fermented using the carbonic maceration method, typically used for red wines. This technique was chosen for the freshness it imparts to the wine. After fermentation, the various components are aged on the lees for nine months before being finally blended and bottled.

On the palate, this expressive white wine inspires with its numerous fruity notes, creamy texture, and crisp acidity. The Nederburg De Anchorman Chenin Blanc is perfect for dishes with fish, poultry, pasta, or salad. The wine takes its name from Philippus Wolvaart, the founder of the estate, who had the courage and vision to use pristine, wild land for the cultivation of premium wines. One of the grape varieties cultivated by Philippus Wolvaart at that time was Chenin Blanc.
