It all began in the mid-19th century, when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild founded Mouton Rothschild. His wines were eagerly received by visitors to his château. When his grandson took over the business in 1922, the winery expanded steadily. Baron Philippe de Rothschild founded the subsidiary Mouton Cadet in 1930 to market accessible wines to a wider audience. This was more than successful. Today, Mouton Cadet is one of the most respected wineries in the world.
