The Louis Michel Chablis Premier Cru Montmain 2022 beautifully demonstrates why this house is so beloved by lovers of pure Chablis: everything here revolves around tension, chalky precision, and a saline, terroir-driven style without oak influence. Montmain is located on the left bank of the Serein and is known at Louis Michel for its cooler, wind-exposed location, which gives this wine extra freshness and focus. Montmain is also a Premier Cru climat within Chablis. What is a Premier Cru in Chablis? It is an officially recognized climat with a higher quality status than ordinary Chablis, linked to a specific location and its own style.

Vineyards and region

The power of this wine begins on the left bank of the Serein, in a climat that directly translates freshness and minerality into the glass.

  • Location / Origin: Montmain is located on the left bank of the Serein, within the Premier Cru zone of Chablis. Louis Michel works with 4 plots within this climat.
  • Exposure: The vineyards have a southeastern exposure. This helps to build ripeness while the wine maintains its crisp linearity.
  • Soil: The subsoil is Kimmeridgian, with hard limestone in a pronounced clayey matrix. In some places, the soil is quite deep, giving Montmain a little more breadth without losing its chalky character.
  • Climate & influences: Montmain is a cool, in some years even cold, climat that is susceptible to spring frost. The slope is open to the wind, which contributes to a fresher, tighter style.
  • Vineyard: The plots were planted in 1983 and 1987. Within the domain, they connect to vineyards with an average age of about 50 years on the most prestigious plots of Chablis.

Vinification and aging

In the cellar, Louis Michel deliberately remains in the background, so that Montmain primarily tastes of its own origin.

  • Fermentation: Fermentation is long, with indigenous yeasts and temperature-controlled tanks. This is followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentation, which adds extra texture without removing the freshness from the wine.
  • Aging / Oak aging: The wine ages for 18–20 months exclusively in stainless steel, with as little intervention as possible. This choice keeps the wine crisp, precise, and fully focused on chalk, salinity, and pure Chardonnay expression.

Grape composition

Everything here revolves around one grape that can show its tightest and most mineral face in Chablis.

  • 100% Chardonnay – Chablis Premier Cru Montmain: Chardonnay forms the complete basis here, giving the wine its combination of citrus, apple, chalkiness, and saline tension. In this appellation, this results in a pure, precise, and classically structured Chablis.

Tasting notes and serving tips

On the nose, you get spicy floral notes, toasted almond, candied lemon, and apple. The mouth is lively, chalky, and saline, with a pure attack and great precision. This is an accessible but serious Premier Cru with beautiful energy and clear terroir expression.

  • Serving temperature: 12–14 °C works best here, as this range beautifully brings out both the aromatic finesse and the chalky tension and saline length.
  • Dishes: Shellfish and crustaceans, rich fish dishes like salmon or tuna, and mild soft cheeses pair particularly well here.

Awards

  • 4.1 stars, Vivino: An excellent rating that shows Montmain is also widely appreciated by wine lovers.

More information about Louis Michel & Fils

Louis Michel & Fils has been making Chablis since 1850 and is still firmly rooted in the heart of the region. The family operates with a very clear philosophy: wine is made in the vineyard, the cellar should remain as discreet as possible, and stainless steel best preserves the original expression of each terroir. This is precisely why Louis Michel's wines are so recognizable, precise, pure, and unmistakably Chablis.
