La Giaretta Cor di Vin 95 2018 Rosso Veronese IGT, Veneto
La Giaretta Cor di Vin 95 2018 is an exceptional red wine from Veneto, crafted as a personal interpretation of the Valpolicella tradition. The name is a play on words from the Veronese dialect: Cor means heart and di vin means of wine, together signifying the heart of the wine. The number 95 refers to the base of 95% Corvina, complemented by 5% Marselan, a French cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. Through late harvest, drying on the vine, and maturation in small French oak barrels, this Rosso Veronese gains more depth, color, and structure than a classic Valpolicella.
Vineyards and region
Cor di Vin 95 comes from Veneto, with La Giaretta as a family business in Valgatara, in the heart of Valpolicella.
• Location / Origin: La Giaretta is located in Valgatara, in the municipality of Marano di Valpolicella. This places the winery right in the middle of one of the historical zones for red wines from Veneto.
• Region: Rosso Veronese IGT gives winemakers more freedom than the classic Valpolicella DOC rules. This allows La Giaretta to use Marselan in addition to local grapes, giving this wine its own distinct style.
• Estate: La Giaretta works with grapes from its own estate. The indigenous Corvina plays the main role and forms the basis of many of the house's wines.
Grape composition
Cor di Vin 95 is made from Corvina with a small addition of Marselan.
• 95% Corvina – Veneto: Corvina gives the wine its cherry fruit, fresh acidity, elegant structure, and recognizable Veronese signature. In this wine, Corvina clearly forms the heart of the blend.
• 5% Marselan – Veneto: Marselan is a French cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. This grape adds extra color, aromatic depth, and more intensity in aroma and taste.
Vinification and maturation
The uniqueness of Cor di Vin 95 lies mainly in the late harvest and maturation in French oak.
• Harvest & Selection: The grapes dry on the vine due to late harvest. This increases concentration and gives the wine more ripeness, body, and depth.
• Maturation / Oak aging: The wine matures for 15 months in small French oak barrels with medium toast. This adds extra structure, spiciness, and roundness, without completely overshadowing the fruit core.
• Bottle aging: After oak aging, Cor di Vin 95 matures for another 5–7 months in bottle before release. This extra rest helps to integrate the tannins and oak influence better.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
In the glass, Cor di Vin 95 is deep and intense, with ripe cherry fruit, dark fruit, spiciness, and subtle notes of French oak. The taste is full, round, and structured, with soft tannins, ripe fruit concentration, and a warm, long finish. Marselan gives the wine extra color and aromatic tension, while Corvina preserves the fresh Veronese core.
• Serving temperature: Serve this Rosso Veronese at 16–18 °C, so that the ripe fruit, spicy oak notes, and soft tannins come together beautifully.
• Dishes: Excellent with grilled meat, game, pasta with rich meat sauce, stews, mushrooms, and aged cheeses.
Awards
• 4.2 stars, Vivino: A strong user rating for this characterful Rosso Veronese from La Giaretta, in which Corvina and Marselan together create a powerful yet smooth style.
More information about La Giaretta
La Giaretta is a family business from Valgatara, in the heart of Valpolicella, founded at the end of the 1950s by Bruno Vaona. Today, the winery is run by Francesco and Francesca Nicoli, who continue to place the classic grapes of Valpolicella at the center of wines with a clear regional identity. Cor di Vin 95 showcases their more idiosyncratic side: rooted in Corvina and Veronese tradition, but with Marselan and French oak aging just outside the classic lines.
