If you drive inland from Las Ramblas in the heart of Barcelona for about two hours, you'll find yourself in a breathtaking area called Priorat. This region is almost magical. Rugged and mountainous, with dazzling vineyards, it's perhaps the most beautiful Spanish wine region. Priorat is part of Catalonia and has only been considered a serious wine region for a few decades. Previously, the climate was considered too hot and the soil very rocky, making it impossible for viticulture. However, some creative individuals took the plunge and focused on wines from Priorat. This risk has paid off. Today, all the finest Spanish wines come from Priorat.

The vineyards of La Garnatxa Fosca Priorat

The Proyecto Garnachas winery has also acquired several vineyards in the prestigious Priorat region. Here, they continue their mission to create an ideal tribute to the Garnacha grape. Throughout Spain, they have beautiful vineyards that all grow the same grape: Garnacha. This allows them to clearly showcase the differences between wine regions to the public. The grapes for La Garnatxa Fosca Priorat grow at an altitude of approximately 350 meters. The vines are extremely old; sometimes up to 60 years old! When the grapes are deemed ripe enough, they are harvested by hand. This ensures that only the finest grapes are considered for La Garnatxa Fosca Priorat.

The oak aging of this red wine is what makes it so special. La Garnatxa Fosca Priorat is aged for a full 10 months in French oak. This gives the wine a wonderfully vibrant and robust character. This is clearly evident in the vibrant aromas. You'll smell oak, vanilla, minerals, and fresh herbs. The fruitiness is varied; both red and dark fruit are clearly discernible in the aroma and flavor of La Garnatxa Fosca Priorat. Its unique character pairs well with game dishes such as hare and wild boar.
