Château Grand Moulinet 2023 Pomerol, Bordeaux
Château Grand Moulinet 2023 is a red Bordeaux from Pomerol, made by the Ollet-Fourreau family, the family behind Château Haut-Surget. This small Pomerol estate beautifully showcases the round, deep style of the Right Bank, with Merlot as the main grape and oak aging for added structure. The combination of ripe dark fruit, soft tannins, and a clear hint of oak makes this a classic Pomerol with great table value.
Vineyards and region
Château Grand Moulinet comes from Pomerol, one of the smallest and most recognizable appellations on the Right Bank of Bordeaux.
• Location / Origin: Pomerol is located in the Libournais, on the Right Bank of Bordeaux. The appellation is known for small estates and red wines in which Merlot usually plays the leading role.
• Estate: Château Grand Moulinet is a small Pomerol estate of about 2.5 hectares. In addition to Château Haut-Surget in Lalande-de-Pomerol, the Ollet-Fourreau family also owns Château Grand Moulinet in Pomerol.
• Soil: Pomerol is known for soils with clay, gravel, sandy gravel, and iron-rich subsoil. Especially clay and iron-rich soils give Merlot extra roundness, depth, and structure here.
• Appellation: What is Pomerol? Pomerol is a Bordeaux appellation without an official château classification, where its reputation is mainly built on small estates, Merlot, and very recognizable terroirs.
Grapes
This Pomerol is all about Merlot, the grape that can show its most velvety and deep side in Pomerol.
• 100% Merlot – Pomerol: Merlot gives Château Grand Moulinet its roundness, ripe dark fruit, soft tannins, and full mouthfeel. In Pomerol, the grape often gains extra depth due to the combination of clay, gravel, and iron-rich soils.
Vinification and aging
The wine gets its structure and spicy depth from aging in oak.
• Aging / Oak maturation: Château Grand Moulinet ages for 10–12 months in new barriques. This maturation gives the wine extra tannic structure, vanilla, spiciness, and a more pronounced oak profile, without pushing the ripe Merlot fruit into the background.
• Alcohol percentage: With 14.5% alcohol, this Pomerol has enough power for its dark fruit, oak aging, and full structure.
Tasting notes and serving tips
In the glass, Château Grand Moulinet 2023 displays a deep red color, with aromas of ripe dark fruit, forest berries, vanilla, and spicy oak notes. The taste is full and round, with juicy Merlot, soft tannins, and a firm yet approachable structure. The finish is long, warm, and slightly spicy.
• Serving temperature: Serve this Pomerol at 16–18 °C, so that the dark fruit, soft tannins, and oak notes come together beautifully.
• Dishes: Excellent with red meat, rack of lamb, game dishes, duck breast, stews, and aged cheeses.
Awards
• 4.0 stars, Vivino: A good user score for a classic Pomerol with ripe Merlot fruit, oak aging, and an approachable Bordeaux structure.
