Carl Ehrhard Berg Rottland Riesling Spätlese BIO

Berg Rottland brings Riesling to life with its opulent side, showcasing ripe fruit, brilliant precision, and a texture that immediately captivates. This organic Spätlese reveals the pure Rheingau terroir, enhanced by crisp acidity and a crystal-clear mineral undertone.

Vineyards and region

Berg Rottland is among the warmest slopes in Rüdesheim. The soil consists of gray slate, quartzite, and gravel with a light layer of loess. Thanks to its sheltered location, the grapes ripen first here, a microclimate that regularly allows for high must weights and encourages selective late picking. The result is a style with high ripeness, nuanced acidity, and remarkable harmony. The best bottles from Rottland can mature for thirty years or more.

Vinification and maturation

Harvesting is done late and by hand, in multiple rounds to gather only perfectly ripe bunches. What does Spätlese actually mean in Riesling, and what do you taste? Spätlese is a designation for grapes harvested later with more natural sugars and aromas, resulting in intense fruit, greater concentration, and a subtly sweet balance that remains tight and precise thanks to the fresh acidity. In the cellar, Carl Ehrhard ferments traditionally and quietly, after which the wine rests on fine lees to refine texture and length without overpowering the fruit.

Grape composition

Riesling 100 percent from Berg Rottland. The combination of slate and quartzite accentuates citrus, stone fruit, and that characteristic salty-mineral tension so beloved in the Rheingau.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions

Aromas of ripe peach, apricot, and lime blossom with honey and wet stone. On the palate, a seductive sweetness is perfectly balanced by vibrant acidity and a long, clean finish. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees Celsius with spicy Asian dishes, spicy curries, pâté with compote, blue cheese, or fruit desserts with a citrus note. Thanks to its ripe structure and fresh acidity, this Spätlese has impressive aging potential.
