The wines of Schloss Maissau were born out of pure passion. At the beginning of this century, the castle, which dates back to the 13th century, lay abandoned and dilapidated. Only a caretaker remained, performing only the most essential tasks. He was also overjoyed when the Gruber family announced their presence. The Gruber family had already made a commercial splash with other wineries and stumbled upon Schloss Maissau. Despite the shabby vineyards, they immediately saw the terroir's potential. In 2006, the castle, including its 5 hectares of vineyards, was purchased. By the second harvest, the winery had already earned organic certification—thanks purely to their hard work. Today, it is one of the top producers of Gruner Veltliner wines.
