From vineyard to bottle

The origin, grapes and craftsmanship behind this wine.

Hartenberg Chardonnay is a layered white wine from Stellenbosch, produced by an estate that is gaining increasing international attention specifically for its Chardonnay. The wine combines fresh citrus, pear, apricot, and yellow fruit with creaminess, subtle toast, nuts, and a saline-mineral edge. Aging in French oak gives this Chardonnay depth and structure without losing its fresh Stellenbosch character.

This Chardonnay comes from Hartenberg Estate in Stellenbosch, in the Coastal Region of South Africa.

Location / Origin: Hartenberg is situated in a valley on the well-draining northeastern slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch.

Climate & Influences: The estate has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters. The differences in altitude within the vineyards help to combine ripeness and freshness.

Vineyard: The grapes are harvested by hand early in the morning. This helps to better preserve the subtle primary aromas of the Chardonnay.

Selection: The different picking times and vineyard plots are kept separate in the cellar, allowing Hartenberg to rigorously select for quality and balance during the final blending.

The vinification process focuses on complexity, fresh acidity, and refined oak influence.

Harvest & Selection: The grapes are hand-picked and processed separately by plot. This provides more control over the final style of the wine.

Fermentation: The wine is made with an emphasis on freshness and texture, keeping the fruit bright while slowly building its creamy structure.

Aging / Oak treatment: The current official fact sheet specifies 10 months of aging in French oak, of which 30% is new. This imparts notes of toast, hazelnut, cream butter, and subtle vanilla.

Structure: The combination of vibrant acidity, creaminess, and a saline-mineral touch makes for a Chardonnay with tension and gastronomic versatility.

Alcohol percentage: With 12.5% alcohol, the wine remains elegant and fresh, with enough body for richer fish dishes and creamy sauces.

This wine is made from Chardonnay grown in Stellenbosch.

Chardonnay – Stellenbosch: Chardonnay gives this wine its citrus, pear, apricot, creaminess, and soft structure. Thanks to the cool morning harvest, plot selection, and aging in French oak, the wine gains extra depth without losing its fresh profile.

More about Hartenberg

Hartenberg Estate is one of the historic wine producers of Stellenbosch. The first viticulture on the estate dates back to the end of the 17th century, and parts of the old cellar date from the 18th century. The estate is known for its red wines, especially Shiraz, but the Chardonnay is clearly emerging as a white star within the range. Hartenberg works regeneratively, with great attention to soil health, biodiversity, and the preservation of the vineyards for future generations.
