A winning legacy

The rugby world was shaken when a young, unknown, 19-year-old Albertus Viljoen van der Merwe, "Alvi" to his friends, scored. It was his first try in history against the All-Blacks rugby team, who had previously been unbeatable. The charismatic founder of Alvi's Drift was subsequently selected as the 221st player to play for the South African national rugby team, the Springboks, thanks to this try. Alvi's farm in Worcester, South Africa, continues this winning legacy. Since its founding, Alvi's Drift has produced world-class wines of exceptional quality and value. With the 221 range, they pay tribute to the winning Alvi and Springbok team.

The vinification of Alvi's Drift 221 Chenin Blanc

The ripe Chenin Blanc grape bunches are hand-picked in the early morning to preserve the grape's quality and freshness. The grapes are destemmed and gently crushed, after which fermentation with wild yeast strains begins. Sixty percent of the juice is fermented in French oak barrels, with the fine lees regularly stirred, giving the wine added complexity. This is then aged in barrels for a further twelve months. Finally, this wine is blended with the remaining forty percent, which has not been fermented or aged in oak, but rather aged. This creates the delightful freshness so characteristic of Alvi's Drift wines. The wine has a light and bright straw yellow color. In the glass, it reflects like crystal clear water. The aroma is complex, dominated by nectarine and peach, complemented by beautifully integrated aromas of pear, apple blossom, and vanilla. The wine has a full and lingering mouthfeel, and the taste is elegant and creamy with a long finish.
