From vineyard to bottle

The origin, grapes and craftsmanship behind this wine.

On the hillside near the medieval castle of Soave grows a white wine with a remarkably rich and layered style. La Rocca has been one of Pieropan’s single-vineyard wines since 1978 and was an innovative step at the time: Soave aged in oak. The result has a warm, soft character and a long finish, with plenty of room for refined aromas. This cuvée shows why the family places so much importance on individual vineyards. Here, the site is given its own name and its own expression in the glass.

La Rocca is a single, organically farmed vineyard.

  • Location / origin: The slope of Monte Rocchetta is located near the castle of Soave, in the Soave Classico area of Veneto in Northern Italy.
  • Soil: Limestone of marine origin and clay form the subsoil here. This is a characteristic distinction of this specific vineyard.
  • Vineyard: The vines are 10–50 years old. Organic cultivation aligns with Pieropan’s focus on preserving the vineyard.

A late harvest and long maturation give the wine depth.

  • Harvest: The grapes are picked by hand at the end of October, often in 2 rounds to select the ripest bunches.
  • Fermentation: After destemming and gentle pressing, fermentation begins at 14–18 °C in enameled concrete tanks. It is continued in French and Slavonian oak barrels.
  • Maturation: The wine remains on the fine lees for 12–15 months, for 70–80% in French tonneaux and for 20–30% in large Slavonian barrels. This provides extra body and cohesion. This is followed by rest in the bottle.

The local grape is given every opportunity in this cuvée.

  • 100% Garganega – Soave Classico: Garganega provides ripe fruit, almond notes, and the structure for long oak aging here.

More about Pieropan

The history begins in 1880, when village doctor Leonildo Pieropan founded his winery in Soave. His grandson Leonildo, known as Nino, gave the house a new direction starting in 1966 by placing the vineyard at the center. This led to the creation of separate cuvées such as Calvarino and La Rocca, each with its own character. After Nino’s passing in 2018, his wife Teresita and their sons Andrea and Dario continued the work. That fourth generation connects the family past with innovation: in 2022, the underground Cantina Leonildo Pieropan opened, carefully integrated into the hillside landscape.
