The 2021 vintage in Chianti is considered outstanding with a score of 95. The wines are of very high quality but may still have youthful tannins.

The story of this beautiful winery began in 1968 when Carlo Antonini, a passionate teacher and beekeeper, purchased the estate from Conti Guidi. The Guidi family was a noble family that owned one of the finest vineyards in Tuscany. Carlo has since passed on his great passion for wine to his son Alberto, who, together with his wife Alessandra, is striving to elevate everything to an even higher level. And they've succeeded brilliantly; through their hard work and incredible drive to produce the finest Chianti wine, the Poggiotondo winery has truly become an icon.

The old Chianti vineyard of Poggiotondo

Today, Poggiotondo boasts very old vines in its vineyards, which together cover twenty-eight hectares. These old vineyards are situated at an altitude of up to one hundred meters, allowing the Mediterranean climate to thrive. The focus is on native grapes such as Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, and a small amount of Trebbiano for the white wine. However, for this red Chianti, Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Colorino are used. These are harvested by hand and subject to a rigorous selection process. Only the finest bunches are brought to Poggiotondo, after which the entire wine is aged in oak barrels and also in cement vats.

The scent and taste of the Poggiotondo Chianti

This red Poggiotondo Chianti wine is entirely organic, and the taste is clear; it's pure and clean. The ripe aroma reveals hints of dried oregano, anchored by dark and red cherries. The palate is full-bodied with many refined fruit notes such as currant, cherry, and blackberry. The beautiful, light acidity creates a pleasant mouthfeel, revealing the spiciness. This red Chianti is ripe and full-bodied with refined tannins that make the wine very smooth. This red wine is perfect for evening dining but can also be paired with dishes such as lamb, pasta, and, of course, pizza.
