The Jean Leon winery has a remarkable history. Born in Spain in 1928, Jean Leon decided at a young age to try his luck in America. He attempted several times to stow away a ship bound for the US in the French port city of Le Havre. After eight attempts, he succeeded, and Jean Leon initially ended up in New York. For the first few years, he was the cab driver of taxi number 3055; a number that would play a major role in his life. In 1945, he started working in Hollywood at the restaurant Villa Capri. This restaurant is world-famous in part because of its famous owners: Frank Sinatra and Joe DiMaggio. At this restaurant, he befriended none other than James Dean. Together with him, Jean Leon opened a new restaurant in Hollywood, La Scala. In the 1950s and 1960s, this restaurant was the place for the great and the good to dine, with names like Marilyn Monroe and JF Kennedy in mind. Ultimately, his ambition drove him even further, and he returned to Spain to make wine. He started his own vineyard in Penedes, just west of Barcelona. The 3055 line remains one of Penedes' best-selling wines. Since 2012, all Jean Leon wines have also been certified organic. So, that's a double pleasure.
