Maires Bodegas y Viñedos combines family heritage with modern precision in DO Toro. The idea arose in 2015 when cousins Fernando and Pablo decided to revive their ancestors' winemaking tradition. The name Maires refers to four generations of grape growers. Since 2020, they have been working in a new, contemporary winery with one goal: to create wines that are instantly recognizable and that clearly express the character of Toro.

Vineyards and region

The plots are spread throughout Toro on sandy and stony soils that warm up quickly, drain perfectly, and keep the vines healthy. You'll find both wire-trained plantings and traditional bush vines. Their ages range from approximately 15 to as much as 85 years, and some locations have ungrafted vines growing on their own root systems. Cool nights, abundant sunshine, and low rainfall ensure ripe fruit that retains freshness, exactly what Tinta de Toro needs.

Winemaking and style

Hand-harvested in small crates, rigorous selection in the cellar, and fermentation at controlled temperatures form the foundation. Depending on the cuvée, a brief cold maceration is carried out beforehand and pumped over two to three times a day during fermentation to extract color, aroma, and soft tannins. The Roble wines are aged for several months in French oak for subtle spice and roundness. Crianza is aged for approximately 12 months in barrel, and the top cuvées are aged even longer, adding depth and length without losing the fruit. The result is a range of wines that are deliciously drinkable even young, yet still possess sufficient backbone.

Grapes and cuvées

Tinta de Toro, the local Tempranillo variety, is the backbone. It offers concentrated berry aromas, a vibrant color, and a natural structure. The lineup includes energetic young styles, accessible Roble wines with short barrel aging, a classic Crianza with more complexity, and a Selección Especial from very old vines with added depth and aging potential.

Family and vision

Fernando and Pablo combine respect for the rhythms of nature with contemporary techniques. Their philosophy is simple: constant care in the vineyard, meticulous grape selection, and a clear, recognizable style in the glass. This creates a portfolio that appeals to both connoisseurs and curious wine lovers.

Veelgestelde vragen

What is Tinta de Toro?

Tinta de Toro is the local clone of Tempranillo in DO Toro. The grape has smaller berries and thicker skins, resulting in wines with deep color, high concentration, and powerful structure.

Why is Tinta de Toro so suitable for Toro's climate?

The grape is well-suited to the extreme continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. The thick skin protects against sun and drought, allowing the grapes to ripen optimally without losing their freshness.

What characterizes the vineyards of Maires Bodegas y Viñedos?

The vineyards are situated at altitudes of 650 to 750 meters, with sandy soils and gravel layers. Some vines are over 80 years old and ungrafted, which is rare and creates deep concentration in the wines.

How does Maires Bodegas y Viñedos work in the cellar?

The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented separately by plot to preserve the character of each terroir. Aging takes place in French and American oak barrels, depending on the style of the wine.

When was Maires Bodegas y Viñedos founded?

The winery was officially founded in 2015, but the family continues a centuries-old winemaking tradition. Their roots in winemaking go back hundreds of years and form the foundation of Maires' modern vision.

Does Maires Bodegas y Viñedos operate sustainably?

Yes, the winery operates with minimal intervention, respect for biodiversity and the preservation of old vineyards, thus contributing to the sustainable future of DO Toro.
