A surprising winery in our selection. The wines are intense and robust, almost spirited. The origin is difficult to guess. We're amazed when we look at the label, because Bodega Carrau's wines originate from Uruguay in South America.

South American wines from Uruguay

When you think of South American wine, Uruguay isn't the first thing that comes to mind. It's mainly the wines from Argentina and Chile that enjoy a certain global reputation. But don't dismiss Uruguayan wines just yet: the vineyards in this country are located at the same latitude as those in Chile and, for example, South Africa. The location is therefore perfect. The wines are too: just try the wines from Bodega Carrau!

South American wines from Bodega Carrau

Bodega Carrau has a long history. It's a true family business, now run by the 9th and 10th generations. The family still produces according to the vision of founder Juan Carrau in the 18th century. What's remarkable is that Bodega Carrau originated as a Spanish winery. As early as the 18th century, Bodega Carrau exported from Spain to the rest of the world. However, the economic depression of the 1930s prompted the family to make a fresh start in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. From there, the empire continued to expand.

The wines of Bodega Carrau

Bodega Carrau's vineyards boast some of the oldest vines in all of Chile, as the family quickly recognized the area's potential. Bodega Carrau's vineyards encompass a whopping 60 hectares in the Las Violetas region. The vineyards cultivate a wide variety of grapes. Besides white grapes like Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, you'll also find ample Malbec, Tannat, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, all of which Bodega Carrau uses to create superb wines.

Bodega Carrau's wines are versatile and diverse. And surprising. After all, who would expect a wine from Uruguay? Our oenologists are particularly impressed with this winery's full-bodied Chardonnay. Juan Carrau Chardonnay de Reserva is a beautiful wine that clearly showcases the craftsmanship of 10 generations of winemakers.
