The Port from Portugal

Port was discovered by chance. In the 17th century, the English imported large quantities of Portuguese wine. Because it often spoiled and soured during the then-long voyage, they decided to add alcohol. This halted the fermentation process, preventing the sugars from being converted into alcohol. The result is something the Portuguese are still proud of some four hundred years later.

The Port of Andresen Port

Many Port houses have English names. They were entrepreneurs who established trading houses around Porto. Jann Hindrich Andresen was another entrepreneur with a keen business sense. He arrived in Porto as a crew member, and after a disagreement with the captain, the ship sailed away without him. Thanks to his commercial acumen, within five years, in 1845, he had established a hugely successful Port house. By the end of the 19th century, Andresen was the wealthiest resident of Porto.

Today, Andresen is one of the few houses entirely owned by the same family. They still manage to amaze both friends and foes with their successful Port wines. They may not be the largest in production, but when it comes to quality, they outshine the competition. They are particularly impressive in the field of Tawny Port, such as the Andresen 10-Year-Old Tawny Port.
