Spalletti Poggio Reale Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG 2019 Tuscany, Italy

Spalletti Poggio Reale Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG 2019 is a characterful red wine from the Tuscan Maremma, made from Sangiovese from Vigne a Porrona near Cinigiano. The vineyards are located at the foot of Monte Amiata, a short distance from Montalcino, in a part of Tuscany where warmth, ventilation, and altitude combine to produce ripe grapes with clear structure. The 2019 harvest was consistent, with spring rains providing sufficient water reserves and a summer without extreme heat. This results in a Montecucco Sangiovese with ripe red fruit, spiciness, firm tannins, and the depth of aging in 500-liter tonneaux.

Vineyards and region

This wine comes from Montecucco, a DOCG area in the Maremma where Sangiovese develops a powerful and spicy Tuscan style.

Location / Origin: Vigne a Porrona is located in the municipality of Cinigiano, in the province of Grosseto. The vineyards are approximately 2 km southeast of Montalcino, placing Montecucco directly next to one of Tuscany's most famous Sangiovese areas.

Altitude: The vineyards are located at an altitude of 350 m. This location helps balance ripeness, freshness, and structure.

Soil: The soil consists of medium-heavy clay with a lot of skeletal material. This structure ensures good drainage and helps the vines produce grapes with concentration and firm tannins.

Climate & Influences: Vigne a Porrona is located between the Ombrone valley, the Val d’Orcia, and the western slopes of Monte Amiata. The Mediterranean climate, constant ventilation, and proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea contribute to healthy, even ripening.

Vineyard & Yield: Planting density is between 5,500–6,000 vines per hectare, with an average of 7 tons of grapes per hectare. This controlled yield helps achieve greater concentration in the fruit.

Grapes

Spalletti Poggio Reale Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG is made from 1 grape variety.

Sangiovese – Montecucco DOCG: Sangiovese forms the entire base of this wine, giving it its red fruit, lively acidity, spicy notes, and tannin structure. In the warmer, well-ventilated Maremma, the grape gains extra ripeness, body, and a fuller mouthfeel.

Vinification and aging

The vinification aims for color, structure, and a clear expression of ripe Sangiovese.

Vintage & Harvest: 2019 was a consistent year, with good water availability thanks to spring rains and a summer that was warm but not extremely hot. This allowed the Sangiovese grapes to ripen evenly.

Fermentation: Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, with about 25 days of skin contact. This longer maceration gives the wine color, tannins, and spicy depth.

Aging / Wood aging: The wine ages in 500-liter tonneaux of toasted French oak. This size gives subtle wood influence, extra roundness, and more structure, without overpowering the red fruit.

Alcohol percentage: At 13.5% alcohol, this Montecucco has sufficient power for its ripe fruit, firm tannins, and wood aging.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions

In the glass, this Sangiovese displays aromas of dried cherry, red berries, spring flowers, espresso, bark, ash, and spicy oak notes. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with firm tannins, fresh tension, and a warm, Mediterranean spiciness. The finish is full, savory, and long.

Serving temperature: Serve this Montecucco Sangiovese at 18–20 °C, so that the tannins feel softer and the spicy, ripe fruit notes open up beautifully.

Dishes: Excellent with wild boar ravioli, roasted meats, Tuscan beef dishes, cured ham, salami, mushrooms, and aged cheeses.

More information about Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari

Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari Tenute builds on a family history dating back to the end of the 18th century. In 1911, the historic Tuscan wine name Ruffino came into the family's hands, after which Nino Folonari consciously opted for quality over mass production in the 1960s. Since 2000, Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari have continued this course with their own Tuscan estates in important wine regions, including Vigne a Porrona in the Maremma, where Sangiovese plays the main role in Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG.
