Tinwood Brut 2021 West Sussex, England
Tinwood Brut 2021 is an English sparkling wine from West Sussex, made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier from Tinwood Estate near Chichester. The wine has exactly that fresh, refined style that makes English sparkling increasingly popular: citrus, melon, fine bubbles, subtle toast and a hint of honey. Thanks to the classic blend and the dosage of 7 g/l, this Brut remains crisp and fresh, but with enough depth and roundness to stand up well at the table.
Vineyards and region
Tinwood Estate is located near Halnaker, just outside Chichester in West Sussex.
Location / Origin: The estate is located on the edge of the South Downs National Park. This region in Southern England is rapidly emerging for sparkling wines due to its cool climate and chalky subsoil.
Vineyard: Tinwood Estate operates as a single estate vineyard, with the grapes coming from its own family estate. This gives the wine a clear origin and a recognizable style within Tinwood's assortment.
Soil: The vineyards are situated on flint and chalky soils. This subsoil is well-suited for sparkling wine, as it can support freshness, tension, and a crisp structure.
Climate & Influences: The family farm is located at the foot of the South Downs and a short distance from the sea. The south-facing vineyards benefit from sunlight, while the cool English climate helps preserve fresh acidity in the grapes.
Vinification and aging
The vinification aims for fresh tension, fine bubbles, and subtle brioche notes.
Method: Tinwood produces its sparkling wines using the traditional method. This involves a second fermentation in the bottle, which gives the wine its fine mousse, lively bubbles, and refined structure.
Dosage: With a dosage of 7 g/l, this Brut maintains a dry and fresh style. This small amount of dosage rounds off the acidity without masking the citrus fruit and the crisp English freshness.
Alcohol percentage: At 12% alcohol, the wine remains energetic and light-footed, fitting the fresh style of West Sussex sparkling.
Analysis: The wine has a total acidity of 7.3 g/l and a pH of 3.07. This combination explains the crisp freshness and lively tension in the finish.
Grape composition
This English Brut is made from the 3 classic grapes for sparkling wine.
50% Chardonnay – West Sussex: Chardonnay forms the fresh and refined base of the wine, with citrus, finesse, tension, and a hint of toast.
30% Pinot Noir – West Sussex: Pinot Noir brings more depth, structure, and character to the blend, making the wine feel fuller than a pure Chardonnay sparkling.
20% Pinot Meunier – West Sussex: Pinot Meunier adds roundness, fruitiness, and accessibility, with extra softness in the mid-palate.
Tasting notes and serving tips
Pale gold in the glass, with a fine mousse and a constant stream of elegant bubbles. The nose reveals citrus, melon, toast, and honey, followed by fresh fruit and a refined, dry taste. The finish is well-balanced, with Chardonnay freshness and extra depth from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
Serving temperature: Serve this English Brut at 6–8 °C, so that the mousse remains fine and the citrus freshness comes through clearly.
Dishes: Delicious with charcuterie, porchetta, lobster, roasted white meat, festive aperitif snacks and light dishes with shellfish.
More information about Tinwood Estate
Tinwood Estate is a family business in West Sussex with a remarkable story. The land came into the hands of Dutch farmer Aad Tukker in 1985, who initially grew iceberg lettuce there. In 2007, his son Art Tukker planted the first 28 acres with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, after which Tinwood grew into an estate with more than 110 acres of vineyard. This shift from salad to English sparkling makes Tinwood one of the more interesting modern wine stories from Southern England.
