Vintage Report
The 2023 vintage in South Africa has been rated with an excellent score of 90 points. The wines from this year are described as still youthful and have the potential to develop further.
The Benguela Cove Sauvignon Blanc is harvested on the south- and west-facing slopes of the vineyard, with soils of slate and iron. This sparkling white wine is full of fruit and bright acidity, resulting in a long, dry finish.
Benguela Cove is located in the Walker Bay sub-region, just an hour's drive from Cape Town International Airport. Situated on the edge of the Bot River Lagoon, the area teems with birdlife and natural flora and fauna, with the Atlantic Ocean on the horizon. The estate, which comprises 70 hectares of vines, was purchased in 2013 by entrepreneur Penny Streeter. The estate has been recognized for its craftsmanship, led by experienced cellar master Johann Fourie.
The unique circumstances in South Africa
Benguela Cove's vineyards benefit from the unique conditions of the estate's location on the ocean's edge on South Africa's southern coast. The southeasterly sea breeze, cooled by the Benguela Current flowing from Antarctica, cools the grapes at night after the hot summer days. This is irrigated by above-average rainfall, ensuring perfect viticulture. The grapes for this stylish Sauvignon Blanc are harvested at peak ripeness and completely destemmed upon arrival at the winery. This is followed by several hours of skin contact before fermentation, controlled by cooling, begins in stainless steel tanks and barrels (25 percent new wood). After alcoholic fermentation is complete, the wine is left on the lees for eight months to preserve its beautiful complexity. What does the Benguela Cove Estate Sauvignon Blanc taste like?
The result is a radiant Benguela Cove Sauvignon Blanc with an inviting bouquet of green figs, green peppers, and sweet tropical fruit, along with subtle hints of flint and juicy lemon drops. On the palate, this attractive and stylish Sauvignon Blanc from cool Walker Bay presents itself with intense tropical notes of pineapple and lemongrass, as well as pleasantly balanced acidity. A white wine of exquisite grace and finesse!Product details
