Vintage Report

The 2023 vintage in South Africa scored 90 points, indicating excellent quality. The wines are still somewhat youthful and have good aging potential.
Walker Bay is known for its excellent Chardonnay grapes, and the Benguela Cove vineyards are no exception. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the vineyards enjoy cool daytime temperatures that drop even further at night. This ensures even ripening and complexity. The vines are planted on weathered shale soil with a very high lime content. This foundation also contributes to unique characteristics.

10 months of oak aging for Benguela Cove Estate Chardonnay

The Benguela Cove winery is located just north of the town of Fisherhaven, near the Atlantic Ocean. They own a total of 62 hectares of vineyards. The grapes are picked at peak ripeness and hand-sorted. The juice from two pressing cycles is divided into four batches with varying levels of exposure to oxygen and solids, after which the juice ferments. These four components are fermented and aged separately. Twenty percent of the juice's solids are left unsettled and go directly into the barrel. The wine is left on its lees throughout the aging period to enhance the texture of the palate. The wine is aged for a total of 10 months in French oak barrels.

The seductive aroma of Benguela Cove Estate Chardonnay

Every wine lover who pours this Chardonnay will instantly fall in love with its magnificent aroma. It glows straw gold in the glass, and the elegant aromas of hazelnut, shortbread, peach, and apple surprise you immediately upon pouring. You'll want to take a sip right away. It's ample on the palate with delightful acidity, enveloped in a soft creaminess followed by the flavors of lemon peel, nectarine, and hints of crème brûlée. The fine texture on the palate leaves a fresh, clean finish. This characterful wine is best described as a wine with refined complexity. This Estate Chardonnay pairs beautifully with meat dishes or a cheese board.
