Vintage Report

The 2019 vintage for dry Portuguese wines scored 89 points. This indicates wines that are early-drinking and have an approachable character.
Casa Velha Douro is a beautiful red wine made by the Agega de Favaois cooperative in central Portugal. The three red grape varieties used for this blend are grown on the warm slate slopes of the Douro. At high altitude, the grapes enjoy the ideal climate, creating roundness while maintaining a pleasantly fresh wine.

Passion for wine at Adega de Favaois

Located in the heart of the Douro Valley, Adega de Favaois is a cooperative of many passionate employees who care for their grapes. The winery's origins date back to 1952, to be precise. They decided to combine new technologies with the region's centuries-old winemaking traditions. And that's precisely what makes the difference. Wines from the Douro region are often a bit more expensive, but this winery succeeds in focusing on quality at a lower price. The blend for this Douro consists of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand on the high slopes between 300 and 450 meters of altitude. In the winery, a strict selection process takes place, after which the grapes are destemmed and crushed. Alcoholic fermentation then takes place for 10 to 12 days at a controlled temperature. Malolactic fermentation then takes place, and after 12 months of aging, the wine is ready for bottling.

The aromas of Casa Velha Douro

The result is a unique wine with a ruby red color. Upon opening the bottle, we immediately savor the aromas of red and black fruit. Plums, ripe berries, blueberries, and even a hint of licorice captivate the nose. On the palate, the wine has good structure with lively acidity. Fresh red fruit, herbs, and, again, licorice resonate in the flavor. Structured with elegant tannins and a clean finish. An ideal wine to pair with red meat and vegetables or a cheese board.
