Frescobaldi CastelGiocondo Brunello di Montalcino 2020
CastelGiocondo is Frescobaldi's Brunello stronghold, a historic cru in Montalcino where a single wine captures the landscape, the altitude, and the soil in layers. This 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is the estate's signature wine, made entirely from Sangiovese, which finds its strength and finesse here. What makes Frescobaldi CastelGiocondo Brunello di Montalcino 2020 so special? The combination of hand-harvested Sangiovese, the mosaic of galestro, clay, and Pliocene sand, and long aging in wood and bottle, results in a Brunello with layered complexity and impressive balance.
Vineyards and region
The wine comes from Tuscany, Italy, from the beautiful municipality of Montalcino, on the CastelGiocondo estate on the southwest side of the village. Here, the Sangiovese vines benefit from different exposures and a diverse soil of galestro (crumbled marl), clay, and Pliocene sand, giving the wine an almost endless range of nuances. The vineyards are situated on slopes with ideal sunshine and good drainage, allowing the grapes to ripen fully and healthily. The 2020 harvest took place under favorable conditions, with ample water reserves from 2019, a warm but balanced summer, and a dry, clear harvest period that produced healthy bunches with beautiful phenolic ripeness.
Vinification and maturation
Upon arrival at the cellar, each batch of Sangiovese undergoes careful selection on sorting tables, ensuring only the finest grapes are fermented. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, with regular pump-overs during the first few days to extract color, aroma, and fine tannins from the skins without hardening the wine. After fermentation, the wine is aged in wooden barrels, where it is given time to develop a balance of structure, aroma, and flavor. The oak aging followed by further bottle aging ensures that CastelGiocondo is released as Brunello di Montalcino only after five years of cellaring, at the moment when freshness, power, and tertiary aromas have harmonized.
Grape composition
Sangiovese – Tenuta CastelGiocondo, Montalcino
The wine is 100% Sangiovese from selected plots at CastelGiocondo, which provides the characteristic combination of ripe red and black fruit, floral notes, firm yet refined tannins and a pronounced mineral signature.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
CastelGiocondo 2020 has an intense, brilliant ruby red color. On the nose, it opens with floral notes, followed by aromas of small red and black fruits such as raspberry, blackcurrant, and pomegranate, followed by tertiary and spicy notes of licorice, nutmeg, green tea leaves, and coffee beans. On the palate, the wine is full and enveloping, with a refined, dense tannin structure and a distinct minerality that holds the palate taut. The finish is long and persistent, with fruit, spice, and balsamic notes lingering. Serve this Brunello di Montalcino at 16-18°C (60-64°F) and pair it with dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-cooked stews, rack of lamb, or game dishes, or with mature hard cheeses to fully explore its layered structure and length.
